The world said goodbye to Cuban leader Fidel Castro on Nov. 25. Many may recognize him as the controversial dictator who defied U.S. power, but here’s some other things you should know!
1. Fidel was the world’s third longest-serving head of state. Fidel led Cuba for five decades, making him the world’s third longest serving head of state. He comes right after Britain’sQueen Elizabethand the King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej. The Cuban leader seceded his reign over to his brotherRaul Castroin July 2006 after he underwent an intestinal surgery.
2. He holds the world record for longest speech ever delivered to the U.N.Fidel holds the record for longest speech ever delivered to the United Nations, clocking in at 4 hours and 29 minutes. Fidel first gave the speech on Sept. 26, 1960, according to the U.N.official website. But the most surprising part is, that wasn’t even his longest speech! Castro’s longest recorded speech was given on Feb. 24, 1998, after he was re-elected to a fifth term as president. That speech lasted 7 hours and 30 minutes. SO crazy!
3. Castro claims that he has survived more than 600 attempted assassinations by the U.S. CIA. Fidel claimed that he survived 634 plots to assassinate him, orchestrated by the Central Intelligence Agency and other U.S. organizations. While none of his allegations have been confirmed, he claimed some of the attempts allegedly included poisonous pills, toxic cigars, exploding mollusks, and chemically tainted suits, according to Reuters. Yikes!
4. He outlasted nine, sitting U.S. presidents. But despite the many attempts to end his life, Fidel was able to outlast nine U.S. presidents! That is pretty impressive. The revolutionary sat through Dwight Eisenhower,John F. Kennedy,Nixon,Ronald Reagan, and bill Clinton, 70. Castro stepped down while George W. Bush, 70, was in office.

5.fidel had at least nine, known children. Fidel had at least nine children by five different women, according to records. He had one son with his first wife in 1949, and he had five sons during his second marriage to Dalia Soto del Valle. While he was married to his second wife however, Fidel had an affair with a woman who gave him his daughter Alina Fernandez. Alina has been the most vocal out of his children. She escaped from Cuba in 1993, disguised as a tourist. Fidel had two more children after Alina. It is difficult to confirm how many children Fidel has had in his lifetime because he was known to have many one night stands and affairs.

No one stood for the blacks the way Castro stood for the Cubans. Nelson Mandela tried though.
