Has anyone noticed how the IT sector in Nigeria seems to be doing well despite the recession? Yes, there are many IT companies struggling but there are also others doing well and attracting foreign investment.
I think it has to do with how they have structured themselves. Most have aligned with the " best practices ethics" in Western countries which makes them more efficient and productive. You step into their offices and it's as if you're not in this country and this sector seems to be the one place where meritocracy us used in recruiting employees.
A major reason could be that most of them have started exporting their software and programming services abroad in a form of outsourcing and therefore have to rise above the " crony capitalism" approach found in most of Nigeria's private sector.
Now I'm not saying they are all perfect as there will be some bad fish in the bunch but majority of them do have their A game on. These companies are helping to drive a new awareness of the country as a land full of programming talent which is a good thing along with the foreign exchange many of them earn. Here there is no room for the sloppiness found in other Nigerian sectors.
Maybe when we start making our country to be more export reliant like the IT sector, possibly things could change for the better. Many companies in the private sector justify their terrible service and low productivity with the thinking that since they only serve Nigerians, they can get away with it.
India, Kenya and Estonia have been enjoying this outsourcing boom and now Nigeria's got onto the table due to the efforts of some hardworking folks. Can we do the same in other sectors especially the agric processing sector where we can export products with value rather than the raw materials everybody shouts about?
Hey, this is just my personal opinion not an expert analysis. What do you think folks?
