7 Popular But Very Unhealthy Practices You Must Stop

1. Eating When Actually Not Hungry, Especially Snacks
This habit or practice is very common amongst people. They have made eating an escape mechanism or a coping device against boredom, anger, sadness, frustration, failure or success. People have taken to eating a lot of snacks to cope with any of the above.
However, this practice is most dangerous to the health because it eradicates or weaken the Hunger signals. You don’t actually know when you are hungry (which is the time you should eat). Losing touch with your body’s natural hunger and satisfaction signals can lead to chronic overeating and unhealthy extra weight that can lead to diabetes, heart disease, and other serious conditions. Your popular and regular sausage rolls, potato chips, plantain chips, banana chips, waffers with all manner of sweetened and carbonated drinks will only flood your system with unhealthy ingredients. Eat for the right reason, because you’re hungry! Stop mindless eating: If snacking is an old, bad habit, ban unhealthy food from your home. – Replace junk food with real food. Stock your kitchen with fruits, veggies, nuts, and low-fat, whole-grain products. – Plan snacks like you do meals

2. Skipping Breakfast
This is one of the most dangerous practices ever! It is most common in Lagos Nigeria especially among the “working class”. The hustles and burstles of a typical Lagos life won’t make some people consider taking breakfast! Some wives have understood the importance of breakfast, they will quickly help their husbands to pack them along *(it will be too sad if they lose their husbands to the piled up effects of skipped breakfast). If you can get your breakfast packed for you, that should be the first thing to attend to before the busy day begins, else you will return the food home, and that of course will piss off your wife.
OK, I need to let you know that your breakfast is the *MOST IMPORTANT MEAL in a day! Skipping the first meal of the day can have serious consequences for your weight, your energy levels, and even your blood sugar. Skipping the fuel keeps your metabolism running on low, which can lead to weight gain and sluggishness. You’ll also create a starve-now-indulge-later eating pattern, which is why breakfast-skippers tend to overeat later in the day. Don’t try to beat the traffic and beat your health to a pulp!

3. Drinking Too Much Alcohol
If you over-drink on a regular basis, alcohol can be a poison. Women who regularly consume two or more drinks a day and men who regularly down three or more are at higher risk for liver damage, various cancers including those of the liver and mouth, high blood pressure, and depression. Women, who are more sensitive to alcohol, can also develop heart disease, brittle bones, and even memory loss.
WHY YOU SHOULD STOP: Soon after you cut back or quit, your digestion will improve and you’ll sleep more soundly. Your blood sugar will be lower and steadier, your blood pressure may fall toward a healthier range, and even your brain will bounce back. You’ll have a healthier liver and cardiovascular system.

4. Eating Too Much Of Fast Food
This may sound weird but it’s a fact that a lot of people depend so much on fast food and it’s very unhealthy. 9/10 young people in a date will rather prefer to visit a fast food than a zoo! Bankers rarely eat any other thing outside the fast food. There are countless fast food joints in Nigeria.
A steady diet of double cheeseburgers and fries washed down with an oversize soda or milkshake often leads to a bigger waistline and other related health problems, like heart disease and diabetes. Trans fat, often found in fast food, raises ‘bad’ cholesterol and blood fats that contribute to hardening of the arteries, as well as firing up inflammation, which contributes to the build-up of fatty plaque in artery walls. Fast foods are expensive and yes they bring expensive predicaments too! Watch it.

5. Spending Too Much Time On The Couch Watching TV
I love Jeniffa’s Diary on Sundays, and thank God it’s only for 30 minutes, Channels TV news is one hour, BPL matches are only on weekends!
When you stay on the couch for too long watching TV, your body gets inactive and you are pressed to sipping a few drinks from your refrigerator to enjoy your movies or programs. This store down and store in some more body weight for you, your eyes become sore having strained the veins, you get a few headaches from such movies or programs if they ended disappointingly, it becomes more challenging to find a proper sleep and so on…watching TV daily shouldn’t be more than 2 hours! Watch your time and do more physically engaging activities.

6. Car Comfort
Funny enough, this appears harmless but not good a practice! Get out of the comfort zone and trek to church with your spouse and kids. This is good especially for people on the bug side who need to actually trim down. Trekking strengthens your joints and bones, puts you in a good mood and ensures your internal health is enhanced. Get the warmth of the environment sometimes rather than the A/c of your posh car!

7. Suya-Syndrome
A lot of people of course will not like to see this but it’s the truth that smoked foods have been linked to cause various types of cancers and other related diseases.
Suya is usually prepared and taken late evening which makes it worse. As tasty as it is, it shouldnt be an addiction, as I know some people will never be able to do without it in day. Smoked Barbecue Fish, Sharwarma, etc should be taken moderately. The smoke from the coals and or charcoals are not good at all for your health!

U could not have said it any better. This is very informative. The way the world is going, i see an epidemic of chronic diseases ranging from hypertension to cancer ravaging the populace. An average nigerian is so guilty of these stuffs.
It beats my imagination when i see people make indomie noodles, junks foods as well as carbonated drinks their staples. And these same people don't even know the meaning of exercises, how much more indulging in them.
Over-bloated kids everywhere, they can't even do a little road-walk without panting. Our babes with drum-bellies are not left out.
I see guys in their thirties looking like baba obasanjo.

Damn, I am tired.
