LAUTECH Crisis: Students' Protest Laudable, Why NANS Must Occupy these Places

Protest, the only tool to seek Nigerian government's unavoidable attention towards issues affecting its citizenry. Citizens meant here refer to the poor masses who are helpless. The recent action staged by the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) students is laudable, as the peaceful protest is the only instrument capable of reminding the two state governments (Oyo and Osun) in-charge that there still exist a University of Technology named LAUTECH within their jurisdiction.

Many Nigerians including the writer of this piece had been on silent mode to observe what comes up next after the strike began six months back. As reported by premium times news portal, it all began far back June 9, 2016 when workers of the university began a strike over non-payment of salaries. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union, and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities in the university had declared the strike to protest a perennial crisis arising from lack of funds to run the institution and pay its workers.

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in recent times had been standing up to their task of protecting the interest of Nigerian Students home and abroad through media and consultations but Nigerian students are yet to reap the fruits of their agitation.

This action of LAUTECH students must get complement from NANS before it gets "cold", unless the gingered course reignited by the students through the protest won't exceed a maximum of one week before it fades away and swept under carpet while the students academic life get jeopardized gradually.

On this note, it's opined that the National Association of Nigerian Student should rise, from Consulting and Consolidating to the last "C" tagged here as "occupy" not just for the student sake but also to ensure the demands of University workers are met as many of them are parents or guardians with one thing or the other to cater for. The strike must be prevented from exceeding six months.

NANS should occupy State Secretariats of Oyo and Osun to remind them of the institution they have "forgotten" in Ogbomoso.

God bless Nigeria
