Someone said that the rice is getting better and better. Very sweet rice but you must be careful no to overcook it. I have not tasted Dangote but have heard complaints about it.

Thank you my brother/sister. In fact, less pressure on the Naira (as a result of good initiatives such as this) led to a 3-month high foreign reserves of $25 billion (which we usually used to support spurious imports).

It is not bad news every time!

Fellow Nigerians, can we for once be realistic in our dealings and expectations.
While it is good news and a welcome development to know we can feed ourselves, I'm still surprised at how many educated adults in Nigeria still fall for the antics of the career politicians.

FACTS:
1. The land mass for rice cultivation in Ebonyi State should be twice the size in Anambra State.
2. Anambra has a standard irrigation for rice farmers(Anambra-Imo River Basin Development Authority), even though they still plant rice once in a year because it's non-functional, but Ebonyi has no irrigation farm for rice production or for any other crop.
3. Anambra State govt has shown a great support for rice farmers in the State through introduction of high yield seedlings (e.g. Farrow 44), and the provision of loans (up to 10m per selected farmer) for standard processing (De-stoning machines) for wider acceptability; Ebonyi farmers have received little or no support from their govt.
4. Anambra State currently produce more tons of rice than Ebonyi State despite the fact that Ebonyi farmers thought their Anambra counterparts, and they also have access to larger land mass. The difference is govt support.
5. If all the inhabitants of Enugu town decide to eat only Abakaliki rice from August that harvest normally begins, not even a grain of it will remain by January
6. Anambra rice has more acceptability status than Abakaliki rice due to the 'de-stoning' addition to their processing, because of govt support

So friends, no matter what the politicians push to the media, you need to think it through because Ebonyi State Gov. is not even planning to initiate irrigation project in his state (to my knowledge), or support the farmers significantly but to boost his public image as if Abakaliki rice was not there before he was born. If Calabar people turn to Abakaliki rice, it will disappear in the market before 3 months at that rate, and we are back to foreign rice square one.

Even the federal govt support for the farmers can only be short-lived without a sustainable program and the will to increase what we have on ground.

In summary, there is a need to expand our local capacity in food (rice) production by laying foundations for such growth, rather than jump around all over the news media celebrating career politicians as if there is a new piece of land added to the existing ones for rice production.

Thanks

Harbdulrasaq:
Demand for Nigerian-grown rice has risen in Calabar amidst rising cost of imported grains.

Local rice looks set to take over kitchens this Christmas, according to an investigation by News Agency of Nigeria.

“It is cheaper, more affordable and even sweeter than foreign rice. So I cannot spend as much as N26, 000 just to buy just a bag of rice simply because it is foreign,” said Calabar resident Richard Nku.

“In this Christmas, I am going for locally made rice and that is what my family and everybody in my house will eat until January,’’ he said.

A rice farmer, Fidel Egoro, told NAN, “We are under serious pressure to deliver on demand and that is why we cannot accept people paying us through banks.

“We do not have the time to go to the bank, so we prefer cash to save time; many people have placed orders for rice and we are trying to meet up before the close of the season,’’ he said.

With increased demand, it is thought prices of local rice might shoot up before Christmas.

“One bushel of rice (equivalent of half bag) sells for N7,250, while two bushels (equivalent of one bag) sells for N14,500).

“This may increase before the close of the season, depending on changes in cost of production,’’ he said.
