- Leaders around the world have constantly expressed concerns over the state of HIV/AIDS in different countries

- As a result, many researchers, including from Nigeria, are busy with possible solutions to the scourge

- A team of researchers from a university in Nigeria recently received global applauds for their discovery of a cure for the disease

Nigerian scientists and researchers at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia state have broken a major record with their discovery of a cure for the dreaded HIV/AIDS.

The discovery was made at a time the world is waiting in anticipation of a vaccine that is being tested in South Africa.

Thisday reports that the Nigerian team is led by Prof Maduike Ezeibe and has been able to prove that Medicinal Synthetic Aluminium-magnesium Silicate (MSAMS), which it developed, can cure HIV/AIDS.

This result of the clinical trial of the MSAMS in male and female HIV/AIDS patients has been published in the British Journal of Medicine & Medical Research 18(11):1-7, 2016; Article no BJMMR.29018.

The report further said the result was among the papers presented recently at the World Virology Conference 2016 held at Texas, US.

Though Ezeibe was not at the conference because he could not raise money for the trip, he sent a video presentation that caught the fancy of the participants.

Ezeibe, a professor of Veterinary Medicine, spoke with journalists and lamented the lukewarm attitude of Nigeria’s health authorities to his discovery.

He said since 2014 when he was given the national patent right (Ref. No. NG/P/2012/639, 2014), the government had not done anything about commercializing the discovery.

He said that the medicine that he had discovered to have antiretroviral properties had been in use.

The professor said: “We Africans lack confidence in ourselves.

“The only science we did is that we discovered that it has charges – negative and positive and since HIV has positive charges, the MSAMS use its negative charges to attract and destroy HIV.”

According to him, HIV/AIDS has remained incurable because of the small size of the virus and immune deficiency it causes.

“HIV destroys lymphocytes (immune cells that clear infections from organs that are inaccessible to medicines.

So, nothing was known that could terminate its infections (and) for that the infection was said to be in ‘sanctuary’,” he said.

He noted that since Aluminum-magnesium Silicate (AMS) molecular platelets (nanoparticles) are smaller (0.96nm) than HIV, the nanoparticles cross physiological barriers to act on all body cells.
