Writing is a way of communicating your ideas to others but many students fail to make the most of the channel to convey their thoughts because of various reasons. One of the main reasons is that they lack the knowledge of different formatting styles and seek help from professionals.

Formatting is an important aspect of academic writing. You have to make sure that you choose the right style to get the best results. You can take help from the teacher in choosing the most appropriate style. MLA writing format is one of many writing formats used for research documents.

MLA Writing Format

MLA stands for Modern Language Association. It defines rules like other writing formats do. MLA writing format is used by students of humanities and arts. It provides a complete guide for referencing as well as formatting. The best thing about MLA is that it helps writers to build their credibility by indicating their source material in their work in an effective way.

MLA Rules

• A header should be placed in the upper right corner of each page
• Use italic for referring to the titles of books and journals
• Use a separate page for endnotes before the reference page
• It is not necessary to make the title page in MLA writing format
• Write your name, teacher name, course and date in the top left corner of the first page. This is the MLA alternative to title page
• Don’t provide page number or paragraph number when you are citing web sources
• Don’t add web address of the source in in-text citations
• Make sure to use a single format for headings throughout the paper. MLA does not provide any fixed format.

In Text Citations

Any source that you use for in-text citations must correspond to the source referred to in reference list. In MLA style, in text citation indicates last name of the author and the page numbers you are referring from. You can mention the author name in a sentence or inside a parenthesis. The choice is yours. For published works such as books, magazines and research articles, you must mention the last name of the author and page number.
