Keep in mind that it is important to keep all the hardware (solar panels,inverters, batteries, controllers etc) close together as possible inorder to keep the cable length short. Most installers make this mistake but remember Dc power attenuates over distance.

The best locations should be

1. Water and weather proof
2. Not affected by direct sunlight except for the panels
3. Insulated to protect against extremes of temperature
4. Allow for ventilation to allow for proper hydrogen gas exchange of lead acid batteries to the enviroment
5. Protected from sources of ignition
6. Kept away from Children, pets and Rodents

Note that non sealed maintenance free batteries give off very small quantity of hydrogen when charging. Hydrogen is explosive. You must ensure that wherever your batteries are stored, the are receives adequate external ventilation to ensure gasses don't build up.
