ABOUT THE DEMOCRATIC WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (DWAN)
The Democratic Writers Association of Nigeria (DWAN) is a prominent literary and intellectual organization dedicated to promoting democratic principles, advocating for social justice, and fostering intellectual discourse in Nigeria. Founded in 2019, DWAN has emerged as a leading platform for writers, poets, scholars, and thinkers to contribute to the democratic development of the country through their creative expressions and intellectual pursuits.
At its core, DWAN upholds the values of freedom of speech, freedom of thought, and freedom of expression. The association believes in the power of the written word to challenge oppressive systems, inspire positive change, and hold those in power accountable. DWAN provides a platform for writers from diverse backgrounds to share their perspectives, engage in critical dialogue, and collectively work towards a more inclusive and democratic Nigeria.
One of the key objectives of DWAN is to promote literary excellence and support emerging writers in Nigeria. The association organizes regular workshops, seminars, and writing competitions to nurture talent, enhance writing skills, and provide opportunities for young writers to showcase their work. Through these initiatives, DWAN aims to build a vibrant literary community and contribute to the growth of Nigerian literature.
DWAN is also deeply committed to using literature and intellectual discourse as tools for social change. The association actively engages in advocacy campaigns, addressing issues such as human rights, gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability. DWAN believes that by harnessing the power of storytelling and critical thinking, writers can shape public opinion, challenge societal norms, and contribute to a more just and equitable society.
Furthermore, DWAN recognizes the importance of cultural preservation and the role of literature in preserving Nigeria's rich heritage. The association organizes cultural festivals, storytelling events, and book fairs to celebrate Nigerian literature, promote indigenous languages, and highlight the diverse cultural expressions within the country. By doing so, DWAN seeks to preserve and promote Nigeria's cultural identity while fostering intercultural understanding and appreciation.
DWAN actively collaborates with other national and international organizations that share its values and objectives. Through partnerships and collaborations, the association seeks to amplify its impact and extend its reach to a wider audience. DWAN also encourages cross-cultural exchange and invites renowned writers and intellectuals from around the world to share their insights and experiences with Nigerian writers.
The association places great emphasis on education and literacy. DWAN runs literacy programs, especially in underserved communities, to improve literacy rates and provide access to books and educational resources. By promoting literacy, DWAN aims to empower individuals, bridge socio-economic gaps, and foster a more informed and engaged citizenry.
DWAN strongly believes in the power of storytelling to shape national narratives and promote democratic values. The association actively supports initiatives that encourage reading, writing, and critical thinking among young people. DWAN believes that by nurturing a new generation of writers and thinkers, it can contribute to the development of a more enlightened and democratic Nigeria.
The Democratic Writers Association of Nigeria serves as a beacon of intellectual freedom, creative expression, and democratic values. Through its various programs and initiatives, the association strives to create a space where writers can thrive, voices can be heard, and ideas can be shared. DWAN's commitment to democracy, social justice, and literary excellence makes it a vital force in the cultural and intellectual landscape of Nigeria.
