The only lucrative course is pursuing what you are good at, what u can do better than others. Have seen rich semi illiterates employing accountants etc into their companies and firing them at will.

99% of economics graduates would never get a job related to their field of study in Nigeria, even outside Nigeria, you need a PhD before you can get a good job in that field. please remove it from that list.

I was about to tell him to remove masscom and replace it with poli sci, why?
The advent of social media and internet has drastically reduced the efficiency of masscom(reduced not wiped out) while poli sci is a many-sided course it's like studying all of social sciences and some arts.

Public Administration is pervasive and eclectic in nature; borrows knowledge from economics, sociology, physchology, political science. It deals wif management, directing, harnessing human resources wif human efforts which must be a proponent of efficiency and effectiveness.

computer science is a scam, how can you study a course that you're been taught by a part time lecturer earning a salary of 30k per month in a state polytechnic? if he really have good skills, he won't be in that village doing that shitty job.

The best thing about law is that you don't need any company to employ you before making money, neither do you need capital and you can make people's annual salary from a small transaction that will not take you more than one week to conclude.

Could you please elucidate your point on why you think Economics should be deleted from the list.

Economics as a discipline is based on assumptions i.e change in X 'may' bring about a change in Y. Without a post graduate programme on finance, Economics may be irrelevant. Opinion.

The reason why I've lost total faith in Nigerian youths.

Job mentality. Slave mentality.

If every jambite goes for these so called "lucrative" courses, who then will go for the non-lucrative courses?

A failed society with so many youths whose minds are solely fixated on the money but are totally bereft of creative ideas that can change their world!

Too bad. embarassed

If you don't mind, what are your career interests? I am always enthused by people who think outside the box. I have found people abroad who were interested in studying aquatic sciences because they were concerned about preserving aquatic life in the face of toxic waste disposal and the likes. What is yours?

As for the topic itself I have this to add:

In more ways than one, Nigerian universities these days have courses on offer that have virtually no industry for their graduands when they finish. Most Nigerians want to study Medicine, Law, Engineering or Accounting (I call them the Big 4) which is often over populated by graduates leaving other economically vital areas of specialisation unattended. Most aspiring students end up studying other courses because they couldn't get into the big four, but still their hearts and minds are removed from their course after graduation because they have no passion for it.

The government has a lot of work to do to ensure our young Nigerians at secondary level understand what Nigeria's goal is and what areas of the economy need to be improved on in the foreseeable years ahead. If you interview a kid in other countries their answers would amaze you. Kids want to be Firemen, Police officers, Pilots, Soldiers, Musicians (Instrumentalists), Historians. This is due to the kind of education they receive at an early age e.g the movies they see and what media portrays of the country. Government can not leave formation at the hands of parents and teachers alone. It needs to grow an intellectual generation of Nigerians founded on the principle of Nation Building. No kid is really dumb, they just haven't found what interests them enough to be really good at. If they had more options you would probably see them shine in one of them. This is why most Nigerians thrive abroad. When you limit the aspirations of a human being to only what is available, you limit their creativity as well.

Every Jambite you ask today would mention one of the big four. But how do you expect people to want to study anything other than the big 4 in Nigeria? The industry just doesn't exist for much else in the society or even worse, the society sometimes works against it. How do you have a country with many psychology students and graduates while our streets are still littered with angry road rage drivers? Does the government not know a few policies on public conduct could provide jobs for these crop of graduates? Or how do you reconcile the fact that Nigeria doesn't feature as a top Tourist destination in the world when there are so many historic locations that could be turned into Tourism spots, but History is still in University curriculums while her graduates roam the streets looking to work in a bank. It's alien to mention the unavailability of agricultural national export when there are thousands of agricultural students and graduates who can't get loans nor access to foreign exchange to buy 21st century machines for mass production.

The government has to focus on what direction Nigeria is headed as a nation and concentrate on providing lucrative opportunities for people to venture into other areas for nation building, this is the only way to decongest the massive concentration of youths in the Big 4, and therefore combat unemployment. The reason for this is simple, if everyone leaves other courses to study the big 4 (that represents only about 30% of what makes a society thick), soon there wont be enough jobs to go around, and you would be left with more people unemployed than employed. Similarly if you do not make those other areas of the economy lucrative for the teeming youth, people who graduated from other fields that can't find a job in their industry (since the industry doesn't exist or is anti-lucrative), would look for ways to get into jobs in the Big 4, therefore quadrupling the rate of unemployment. Soon after, you'll find a skill shortage in other areas that are required for an economy to thrive. Countries like Australia and Canada seeking immigrants with useful skills they have shortage in, are not dumb. Nigeria has the population but the direction deficit is immensely troubling.

PS: I do not have a team of paid advisers on these issues but even I know these things. This kind of topic wouldn't exist in the first place if our government did their jobs well at making every job decent for all. Look at what young people have to deal with these days, worried about choosing lucrative courses when every course is supposed to be useful for nation building, and to think we have paid people in government who year after year don't even know why unemployment exists or how to resolve it. Instead of providing a conducive environment for graduates to thrive in their respective industries, they tell them to learn how to weave a basket to survive. Nigeria is in a sorry state because many sections of the economy are non functional due to a lack of incentive for participation or gross negligence. It's pathetic for the 21st century Nigeria to have mediocres ruling a supposedly educated populace.
