FINALIST
Attached is the finalists from the Kaggle competition for the 2nd Bootcamp Edition by DSN.

Congratulations to our final 106 candidates joining the bootcamp via Kaggle.
We are taking all of them plus few more from our partners/sponsors/volunteers.
There is no need to extend with this update. We shall run same competition again on Thursday or Friday at the bootcamp after a review by Dr Sulaimon Afolabi and even many more Kaggle at the bootcamp...congrats and see you at the camp!

ALSO:
CONGRATS AND GETTING READY FOR THE BOOTCAMP

All campers must patiently read through this and respond to all actions before end of tomorrow, Saturday 07/10/2017. Please share this or the PDF version with other 109 qualified participants outside this room (3 more people made a late submission and were accepted).

Date and Venue
12-15 October, 2017, Peninsula Resort, Km 25 Lekki-Epe ExpressWay

What you must do now
· You now need to confirm your identity as many participants used pseudo-names on Kaggle leaderboard. You need to send an email to the Event Volunteer Registrar, Mr Abraham Durosawo at Abrahamd@capax360.com and must copy Kayode on info@datasciencenigeria.org
· Your email will mention your Kaggle ID as indicated on the attached leaderboard. The title of your email must be “I qualify for bootcamp”.
· Your email will include full name, gender and if there is/are individuals you want to be paired with in your room (there are very large rooms that can conveniently accommodate 3 people). All paired rooms are FREE. However, if you do not want to share with another camper, you can decide to pay for your room.
· We also make special provisions for senior fellows at the bootcamp (PhD level lecturers only)
· There is an event T-shirt and do indicate your size (Medium, Large, ExtraLarge and Extra Extra Large)
· Therefore, your email response format will be as follows:
Kaggle ID/Full name/Gender/ Pairing with XYX/Want private room or I am good with a paired room/T-shirt size/ PhD lecturer or not
· All emails must be received on or before Saturday 7 October 12 midnight.
· The bootcamp starts 4pm on Thursday 12th October, 2017 at the Peninsula Resort, Km 25, Lagos 47; Lekki-Epe Express way, Beside Budo Specialist Hospital.
· Check-in is immediate and class starts 5pm on the dot.
· In case you will not be able to attend, please send an email to the volunteer registrar, so we can replace immediately.

· Day 1 at the bootcamp is compulsory for an updated Kaggle competition and a big picture session with Mr Wale Akinfaderin!
o Our first task at the bootcamp is to discuss the same Students Performance data. Raphael Jemitan PhD and Dr Sulaimon Afolabi (South Africa) shall discuss some fundamental principles and we shall run a 10-hour hachathon from 8pm of Thursday to 6am on Friday. The first 3 on this bootcamp leaderboard will win the books sent to us by Dr Ponmile Oloyede (Vice President Core Modelling, JPMorgan Chase & Co., USA).

o Wale Akinfaderin will also dial in later in the day from the US to share his thoughts on the Kaggle competition and expand our horizon on possibilities in Data Science with his discourse on Data Science for Development. DON’T MISS THURSDAY OPENING SESSION…..it will set the tone for the entire bootcamp!

o There will be a welcome yellow carpet and interview corner at the bootcamp. We shall run video-recorded interviews which will ask interested participants about their qualification journey, particularly their experience with DataCamp and Kaggle. DataCamp is particularly interested in this video for future support to access their contents FREE OF CHARGE. The interviewers will also ask about your expectation and all the razzmatazz. You can also take picture behind the branded backdrop and use our #datasciencenigeria to popularise the bootcamp on all social media as it happens real-time. Always tag Data Science Nigeria – Twitter (DataScienceNIG ) and Instagram (DataSciencenigeria) as you post.

o We strongly suggest that each participant comes with a personal internet access point or have an active data bundle on phone that can be tethered. We are making effort to provide common internet but this is not guaranteed. You will need the internet to upload your Kaggle submissions and do some Microsoft Azure works.

o You must open a Microsoft Azure account. It’s a cloud-based machine learning that we shall be using at the bootcamp. It is FREE for a month at https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/free/

o The Oct 12-15 bootcamp is expecting 4 offshore data scientists/datapreneurs flying in (2 from US and 2 from South Africa), 4 shall be dialling in from USA/UAE/ Canada with many local mentors on-ground while many industry experts will visit at different times to discuss practical and business side of data science

A lot of activities had taken place in the bootcamp and more still to come, with a lot of interesting and interactive sessions with great minds across globe sharing their knowledge and ideas with the campers.

Currently, Bootcamp hachathon number 1 now has 100 entries so far : https://www.kaggle.com/c/datasciencebootcamp/leaderboard

Great work by the boot-campers.

I will be posting this here too: It was posted from a Group I am into.

Hello fellow Analysts... Is anyone interested in free online tutorials on econometrics, research and data analysis? Follow Ngozi Adeleye on http://cruncheconometrix.com.ng. I teach the rudiments of these topics to starters...hit the BLOGPOST and let's take it from there... and if you want to send in a contributory post let me know... Thanks.

The host, would really love as many who are willing to come on board. Having 95% proficiency in the use of Stata and about 65% on EViews and SAS packages, (Trial versions can be downloaded from the internet for learning). The Host would be teaching how to use Stata on her blog.

... So guys, let's take the challenge: learn how to use an analytical software.

2 COMPULSORY COURSES

1) DATA SCIENCE 101 (3 HOURS)

a. The art of uncovering the insights and trends in data has been around since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians used census data to increase efficiency in tax collection and they accurately predicted the flooding of the Nile river every year. Since then, people working in data science have carved out a unique and distinct field for the work they do, this field is data science. In this course, we will meet some data science practitioners and we will get an overview of what data science is today.

2) MACHINE LEARNING WITH PYTHON (4 HOURS)

a. Machine Learning can be an incredibly beneficial tool to uncover hidden insights and predict future trends. This free Machine Learning with Python course will give you all the tools you need to get started with supervised and unsupervised learning.

b. https://bigdatauniversity.com/courses/machine-learning-with-python/

1 ELECTIVE COURSE (Pick 1 from any of these)

3) R 101 ( 5 HOURS)

a. R is a powerful language for data analysis, data visualization, machine learning, statistics. Originally developed for statistical programming, it is now one of the most popular languages in data science. In this course, you'll be learning about the basics of R, and you'll end with the confidence to start writing your own R scripts. But this isn't your typical textbook introduction to R. You're not just learning about R fundamentals, you'll be using R to solve problems related to movies data. Using a concrete example makes the learning painless. You will learn about the fundamentals of R syntax, including assigning variables and doing simple operations with one of R's most important data structures -- vectors! From vectors, you'll then learn about lists, matrix, arrays and data frames. Then you'll jump into conditional statements, functions, classes and debugging. Once you've covered the basics - you'll learn about reading and writing data in R, whether it's a table format (CSV, Excel) or a text file (.txt). Finally, you'll end with some important functions for character strings and dates in R.

b. https://bigdatauniversity.com/courses/r-101/

4) DATA SCIENCE METHODOLOGY (5 HOURS)

a. Learn the major steps involved in tackling a data science problem.

b. Learn the major steps involved in practicing data science, with interesting real-world examples at each step: from forming a concrete business or research problem, to collecting and analyzing data, to building a model, and understanding the feedback after model deployment.

5) DATA SCIENCE HANDS-ON WITH OPEN SOURCE TOOLS (5 HOURS)

· In data science, the opportunity to practice may seem overwhelming initially in terms of the access and configuration of tools. Here is where Data Scientist Workbench, a free cloud-based offering, comes into play. Use this tool to build out your skills!

6) NOSQL AND DBAAS 101 (5 HOURS)

· With the advent of Big Data and agile development methodologies, NoSQL databases have gained a lot of relevance. Their main advantage is the ability to handle effectively scalability and flexibility issues for modern applications.

· Use the Cloudant NoSQL database as an example to learn how to create and replicate databases, load and query data, and other operations.
