Solar batteries have become more costly no thanks to the exchange rate yet they remain the only sustainable solution to erratic power supply. Fuel landing cost recently hit N145 so the government is obviously subsidizing. With the current situation in the country govt may not subsidize for long. So how do you buy an expensive battery and not have it last for a very long time? It ought to. If you know the reasons why your solar battery didnt last long you would have prevented it.

Below are the top reasons why solar batteries fail:

1. Full or near Full discharge:

Every solar battery has a number of cycles it can go. A cycle is simply charge and discharge. The depth to which you discharge your battery and charge them up affect this cycle. So if you have a battery with 1600cycles at 50% depth of discharge and 1900 cycles at 30% depth of discharge. The man who discharge only to about 30% will have his battery last longer. Heavy depth of discharge leads to sulfation of the battery. A sulfated battery is a dead battery.

To simplify this grammar. Dont discharge your battery to the extent they go dead or about to go dead before recharging. This explains why batteries that are charged only from inverters dont last long.

2. Charging with petrol generators.

Batteries require stable frequency to effectively charge well. Most of these petrol generators dont have stable frequecny. This can easily be proven by getting an incandescent bulb. Power it from the generator and watch how it flickers visibly in the eye. Actually every bulb is flickering when put on but at stable 50hz the human would not notice. So if you able to notice a flicker it simply means the frequency of your gen is not stable. Charging batteries with this gen leads to sulfation. A bigger diesel generator however may charge batteries well if not faulty.

3. Over Charging and heat

Over charging batteries or heat causes the battery plates to break down or distort making them to come in contact the result of which makes a 12v battery become 10v. When this happens the battery has suffered sulfation.

Very valid points there, Especially point number 2.
I have personally refused installation request from some clients just because they said they wanted to be charging their battery only with petrol Generator.

This is a very good battery

https://www./ad/okaya-12v-200ah-battery-ID15OdE5.html

There is also Motoma, SEC. They are all good batteries.

We have not stocked iPowerplus battery and inverter before so we cannot say much about them.

I just noticed my inverter battery bulging at the sides. I have I bought it used and have used it well for a year and half. My area has very good supply of electricity. We get up to 23hrs a day in average. I think the inverter is overcharging it especially since most times blackout doesn't last 30mins - 1hr a day. The battery last like 10hrs on our full load.

Also, the inverter refuses to automatically switch to generator but switch with NEPA. I guess the frequency of the gen is not stable. Am using a mercury 1.2kv inverter.

Is your battery GP?
Is your battery installed in a well ventilated area?
The battery is building up hydrogen gas inside.
You may need to change the battery sooner than later.

If you have been following us well, we dont ever recommend charging your batteries from small generators. No need bothering yourself with the problem

No. Its Deka Solar.
Plenty ventilation. Mind you its GEL not flooded.
I only do when it is very necessary most times after a day or 2 straight with no power from nepa. In that case, the battery will be dead and we would need power. This has happened 2 or 3 times since i got it.

From what i read, their is no immediate point of concern. The only thing i have asked my family to turn off the whole system when going out to avoid over charging.
