IBADAN — A POLICEMAN attached to Iyaganku Central Police Station, Ibadan went beserk Wednessday, following the death of his child at Oni Memorial Children Hospital, and sprayed tear gas into the ward leaving other children on admission at the time on danger list.

The name of the policeman was given as Mr. Raymond Egbongbonwuyi, and one of the sources at the hospital said he had service number 303529.

He was said to have been disturbed by the death of his three-year-old daughter who was taken to the hospital on Tuesday but died later that day after doctors battled fruitlessly to save her life.

When the policeman allegedly got to the hospital where the tragic story of his daughter was relayed to him, he allegedly removed all the drips being used to treat five other children in the hospital and sprayed them with the tear gas that he had on him,
After satisfying his quest for vengeance on the innocent babies he was said to have descended on the doctors, beating them mercilessly.

It was sheer providence that the policeman was not armed with a rifle as he allegedly told the doctors and the nurses that they should thank their stars that he was not armed, else he would have shot all of them dead.

Three of the children were still being revived with the help of oxygen by the doctors at press time. Their names are Ekundayo Promise, Lawal Awal and Lawal Mariam.
The mobile policeman who was attached to the Iyaganku Central Police Station was said to have lost another child penultimate week in similar circumstances in another hospital.
According to an impeccable source at the hospital, the daughter of the policeman, Destiny Raymond was diagnosed of severe malaria, chest infection and burns and was treated for respiratory disorder.
Vanguard gathered that policemen from the Oluyole Police Division came to the rescue of other children in the government owned hospital.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adisa Bolanta told Vanguard that the affected policeman had been arrested but said none of the children has died.

I saw the part that said 3 kids were still being revived. Didnt want to conclude that the other two were dead. the other two may not have been really hurt by the rampage. Didnt sound like it to me. Just went by what the police commisioner said.

Policeman may lose job over death of two children [Slap on the wrist?]

AC seeks commissioner's redeployment
From Iyabo Lawal, Ibadan

INDICATIONS emerged yesterday that the mobile policeman, Raymond Egbongbonwuyi, who went berserk and killed two children at the state-owned Oni Memorial Children's Hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, may be dismissed from office over his unruly behaviour.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Baba Adisa Bolanta, who disclosed this to The Guardian, said the embattled officer was already undergoing orderly room trial and once he is found guilty, will face the likelihood of leaving the command.

In the same vein, the Action Congress (AC) has called for Bolanta's immediate redeployment over the incident.

Already, the police chiefs, who described Egbongbonwuyi's action as embarrassing, said witnesses have been called to give evidence and the command was only awaiting the ruling of the adjudicating officer.

Bolanta dismissed claims that the embattled policeman may be suffering from mental disorder, saying investigations so far carried out did not indicate anything of such.

He said: "The man is being dealt with, he is already in detention. We have taken action against him and he is already undergoing trial. It is either he losses his job if found guilty or otherwise, there is no two ways to it".

The police chief, however, denied claims that two children were killed in the process, saying although the mobile policeman went berserk and 'started misbehaving' on learning of his daughter's death, he never killed anyone in the mayhem that followed.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up around the hospital complex to prevent a recurrence of such incident.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babalola Owolabi, who spoke against the backdrop of the incident, said the government has commenced talks with the Police and State Security Service (SSS) on the need to give adequate protection to patients and workers in the hospital.

Owolabi, who expressed sadness over the incident, said the culprit has been arrested while plain-cloth security men have been moved to the hospital so as not to create unnecessary panic among the populace.

The embattled mobile policeman had gone berserk on learning of the death of his three-year old daughter who was on admission in the hospital.

Egbongbonwuyi descended on the children also on admission and fired teargas canisters leading to the death of two while the three others were put on oxygen to revive them.

Patients, medical personnel and parents ran helter-skelter while the confusion lasted and it took the intervention of policemen from the Oluyole Police Station to restore normalcy to the hospital.

In a statement issued in Lagos yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said it was high time police bosses were held responsible for the worsening senseless killings of innocent Nigerians by the police personnel under their command.

It said the comments attributed to the police commissioner that he was yet to be fully briefed on the incident, amounted to a gross dereliction of duty and an unacceptable trivialisation of a monumental tragedy.

AC said nothing in the world could justify the killing of sick children who were receiving treatment in a hospital, describing the action of the policeman as bestial and an indication of the mindset of the average policeman, who believes he can always turn his gun against the citizens, whose tax money was used to buy the gun in the first instance and get away with his action.

"After all, the rampaging policeman in Ibadan was quoted as saying that the children and medical personnel who survived his attack were lucky that he did not have his gun with him", the party said.

It said even if it was established that the policeman's daughter died due to the negligence of the hospital workers, it was still not enough reason for him to take the laws into his hands and snuff precious life out of innocent children in a most bestial manner.

"Almost on a daily basis, innocent Nigerians are killed by policemen equipped and paid from taxpayers' funds to protect the same citizens. Because the police are saddled with the responsibility of arraigning and prosecuting the errant policemen, most of them eventually get away with what amounts to a slap on the wrist, and this has fuelled the growing culture of extra-judicial killings by the police.

"Actions like this have eroded the confidence of the citizenry in the police, whom they believe will not protect them, but will collude with criminals or even kill them. Unless something is done urgently, a civil action against the police may become inevitable", the party said.

AC also said the rising cases of extra-judicial killings in Nigeria could be a reflection of the little premium placed on the lives of citizens by Nigerian leaders, who have helped to dehumanise them (citizens) by their poor leadership and lack of good governance.

"In other climes, even the President of the country would have visited the hospital where those innocent children were so brutally killed. But we have still not heard that even the state governor visited the hospital or made any comment on the tragedy. That reflects the value placed on human life by our leaders", it said.
