It’s commoner than most people think.

Persons with this disorder usually lose touch with reality.
This is because they may hear sounds or voices of unseen or nonexistent people while awake.
Also, they may become unduly suspicious or believe people are planning to harm or make life miserable for them.
Some think that what ever is going on around them (radio, TV etc) is about them.

In addition, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities or lack of volition may account for this change in behavior.
Do not confuse this with depression, another major mental disorder.

HOW IS DIAGNOSIS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA ESTABLISHED?

According to the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for diagnosis of mental disorders, five categories of symptoms are generally used to make a diagnosis of schizophrenia:

Delusion – an idea, usually false, which an individual holds on to firmly despite evidence to the contrary. This belief can’t be explained by the person’s background. For example, and individual may suddenly begin to claim that he is the ‘president’.

Re: Let's Talk Mental Health Here! by RxH8: 3:01pm On May 06, 2017
Hallucination – The person may hear, taste, smell, feel or see shocked things that don’t really exist.
In schizophrenia, hearing strange things is the most common form of hallucination.

Re: Let's Talk Mental Health Here! by RxH8: 3:04pm On May 06, 2017
Disorganized speech – this manifests as talking out of context, inappropriate repetition of words or phrases, or unusual use of words. Disorganized speech is usually a manifestation of fragmented or muddled up thinking.

Re: Let's Talk Mental Health Here! by RxH8: 9:50pm On May 08, 2017
OTHER SYMPTOMS CONSIDERED IN DIAGNOSIS;

Grossly disorganized or catatonic behaviors – these are purposeless or inappropriate, usually unpredictable, behaviors and emotional responses. Unfortunately, this affects the individual’s relationship with family and friends.

Negative symptoms – these refer to the absence or reduction how the individual responds to things and people. Social withdrawal, loss of interest and lack of emotional expression are examples of negative symptoms of schizophrenia. These symptoms may sometimes be confused with depression.

INFERTILITY IS TOUGH ON MEN TOO,STUDIES REPORT.

Johnson and his wife have been trying to have a baby in the past 5 years. After several tests including semen analysis, and hormonal assays, they are now ready for the first cycle of in-vitro fertilization (IVF). “This period of infertility treatments has been very challenging” says Johnson.

Globally, up to 50 million couples experience infertility. This inability to conceive takes a huge emotional burden on women. And men too, as shown by different studies.

It is well known that women bear most of the emotional and physical burden of infertility and treatments.

In view of this,Gynecologists and other health professional traditionally channel their resources and support to women during infertility treatments.

Nevertheless, recent studies show that men experience significant emotional problems too. This may occur before or during treatment.

STUDIES
A 2015 study that followed up couples for 18 months of infertility reported that one out of six men had major depression.
One review of 26 studies of couples on IVF treatment showed that male partners reported elevated depression score before treatment.
This usually increase during the time spent waiting for outcome of IVF treatment.

In another recent study,some participants made the following observations;

"It's really tough, I'd walk past a children's playground and get tears, I get quite depressed...Even when you're watching TV and someone gets pregnant you get upset and you have to turn it off".

Male factors account for inability to conceive about half of a time. This usually centers around producing or delivering the sperm.

The diagnosis of male infertility has a devastating impact on men.

because men are often discouraged from outward display of emotions cry depression and other emotional problems go unnoticed.
Re: Let's Talk Mental Health Here! by RxH8: 6:12pm On May 12, 2017
Like Johnson, many men feel left out during infertility treatments. In fact, women know the man's fertility status before their partners are informed in some cases."I felt embarrased and humiliated when my doctor informed me through my wife that I had low sperm count " says Adrian

Re: Let's Talk Mental Health Here! by RxH8: 2:35pm On May 14, 2017
Men can deal with the stress of infertility by engaging in healthy activities like exercise, writing or pursuing other wholesome activities. Rather than bottling up their feelings, they are encouraged to share with loved ones. Some may also need to seek counseling or other forms of mental health support.

CAN AIR POLLUTION AFFECT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH?

Do you live in an area with relatively high levels of air pollution? If so, you should be concerned about the impact on your mental health, according to a new study.

The study titled “The effects of air pollution on individual psychological distress” was published in the journal Health and place.

There is little debate over the link between air pollution and the human respiratory system: Research shows that dirty air can impair breathing and aggravate various lung diseases. Other potential effects are being investigated, too, as scientists examine connections between toxic air and obesity, diabetes and dementia.
