Many people assume that osteoporosis & arthritis are similar health conditions. However, osteoporosis & osteoarthritis are two common conditions but they differ from each other in terms of nature, symptoms & treatment methods.

Understanding the Difference between Osteoporosis & Arthritis

Both the ailments cause mobility issues & disability in patients but the reasons behind it are distinctive. These reasons can be elaborated with the help of following points.
Osteoporosis - Osteoporosis is a condition which leads to weakening of patient’s bones. Bones may become fragile & poor in quality increasing the chances of fractures even with a minor injury. Osteoporosis may adversely affect a patient’s walking ability or may result in permanent disability. It is a ‘silent disease’ as it causes loss of bone density without showing any significant symptoms. Spinal fractures & wrist fractures are most commonly observed in patients suffering from osteoporosis.
Arthritis - A joint is responsible for mobility of bones. Arthritis is basically a disease which affects the joints & its surrounding tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis & osteoarthritis are the two main forms of arthritis. They can be explained as follows.
o Osteoarthritis - Also known as degenerative arthritis, it is a distressing condition which mostly appears either due to immobility or overuse of a joint. It primarily affects the regions surrounding hips, spine, fingers & feet.
o Rheumatoid Arthritis - It is a condition which affects the joints in feet & hands. In this condition, patient’s body assaults its own healthy tissues & creates pain, swelling & discomfort.

Coping with Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis

Patients suffering from these conditions should promptly seek a medical advice. Most common treatment options for osteoporosis & osteoarthritis are listed below.
Osteoporosis Treatment options - Several exercises may help to maintain the strength of bones. Physical therapists may recommend exercises based on the medical status of patients. Patients should avoid excessive alcohol consumption & smoking as it may worsen the condition. Vitamin D supplements are often recommended to patients for building the bones stability.
Osteoarthritis Treatment Options - Severe discomforting pain is the main symptom of arthritis. Patients should consult an orthopedic surgeon for dealing with the pain. Surgeons may recommend several medications & exercise plan for relieving harsh pain & improving the posture. If everything fails, surgeons may suggest a surgery.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle & proper diet can prove beneficial for the patients suffering from osteoporosis & osteoarthritis as well.
