South Sudan is officially the world's youngest country
, a feat achieved on 9th July 2011 when it gained independence following a referendum that passed with 98.83 of the votes cast. The Republic of South Sudan as it is officially called was before that, a part of Sudan.

South Sudan is officially the world's youngest country
, a feat achieved on 9th July 2011 when it gained independence following a referendum that passed with 98.83 of the votes cast. The Republic of South Sudan as it is officially called was before that, a part of Sudan.

Here are ten other facts you probably didn't know about the country.


The capital of South Sudan is Juba and is the largest city in the country. 


There are four major tribes in South Sudan.The Dinka tribe is the largest, Nuer the second, Azande the third while Bari are fourth. 


A 2008 census recorded a population of 8,260,490 people.While this figure was disputed, a 2015 estimate recorded 12,340,000 which would represent a massive 4,079,510 increase in just seven years. 


South Sudan was the 54th African country to gain independence.




Salva Kiir Mayardit was the first president of the Republic of South Sudan.


South Sudan has 28 states since October 2015 but it had only 10 states before a presidential decree led to an increase.



The child marriage rate in South Sudan is 52% and also more than 9,000 child soldiers had fought in South Sudan's civil war. 

South Sudan has the third largest oil reserves in Sub-Saharan Africa. 


The second largest wildlife migration in the world is hosted by South Sudan's protected area of Bandingilo National park. 


The current educational system in the Republic follows the 8+4+4 system. Eight years of primary education, four years of secondary education followed by four years of university education.
