According to English Oxford Living Dictionaries, a career is ‘An occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress.’ It is a journey and should never be left to chance. Take note of the following tips and see yourself excel in your career.

DEFINE YOUR CAREER GOALS

It is very important to define your career goals (begin with the end in mind). Have a clear picture of how you desire your career to be. To get to a destination you need to know where you are going.

Take time and ask yourself: What kind of career do I desire? Where do I want to be career wise in the next five, ten, fifteen years etc?

‘People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going.’ – Earl Nightingale

TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR CAREER

Your career is your responsibility. Take charge of it. Put strategies in place and take action towards achieving your career goals.

Continuously acquire new skills and upgrade your education/knowledge as the job market is increasingly becoming more competitive and employers are looking for people that will add the most value.

If your dream job requires you to acquire a particular skill, do so. If you need to upgrade your education in order to get your next promotion, do so even before you are due.

‘The price of greatness is responsibility.’ -Winston Churchill

MAINTAIN A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR COLLEAGUES

People who have severed relations with their colleagues often experience stagnated career growth. Such people are sometimes tagged as ‘impossible to work with.’

Always maintain a healthy relationship with your colleagues as this often counts more that the skill and knowledge you possess.

‘When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotion.’- Dale Carnegie

BE LOYAL TO YOUR EMPLOYER

Be hundred percent loyal to every organization you work for as loyalty is one of the most vital traits every employer seeks for in an employee.

‘I’ll take fifty percent efficiency to get one hundred percent loyalty.’- Samuel Goldwyn

It does not matter how good you are at your job. You have to be seen as being loyal to your organization. Be honest, discreet with information and always put the interest of your employer first.

ALWAYS STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE

If you want to make the most of your career, always strive for excellence. Make a demand on yourself to be the best at whatever you do.

Do not limit yourself but rather be passionate and focused because excellence will set you apart attracting referrals, promotion and wealth in the long run.

‘If you deliver excellence right now, that gives you the best shot at the best future you’ve got coming.’ – Robert Forster

KEEP YOUR RESUME UP TO DATE

Keep your resume up to date as you don’t know when job vacancies will crop up. In some cases during a promotion exercise, you will also be required to submit your resume.

You do not want to be in a situation where you have to rush to update your resume when the aforementioned opportunities arise.

‘Opportunity doesn’t make appointments; you have to be ready when it arrives.’ ― Tim Fargo
