I know some of us (or maybe just me smiley) can relate to the following scenarios:

You offer someone some of your food when you know in your heart that you don't want to give a morsel...let alone an actual piece of whatever it is.
Or you offer someone a ride, when in actuality you want to hurry up and get home to rest.
What about allowing a person to go ahead of you in line in the grocery store when they have only 1-2 items while you have a full cart..when you feel in your heart that you were there first, so they have to just wait behind you.
Or letting a person have a parking space, knowing you really don't want to give it.
Or whatever the scenario may be.

Do you actually feel good about what you did? Probably not because you know you really didn't want to do those good deeds with the right intentions. You did those things begrudgingly.

Well imagine doing all those "good" things but doing it BECAUSE you received some sort of good recognition. People praised you or gave you an accolade. They saw the outside...but they had no clue what was going on in the inside.
You did so out of pride. Your heart got puffed up.

Do you know that that's just as bad as doing those things begrudgingly?

It all boils down to motives. And it's time that Christians check those motives with God first.

Ask yourself if you're doing something out of true love for the person (as a human being) OR if you're doing a good deed in order to swell with pride?
It's easy to do good things with impure motives....I know.

It's a heart issue...plain and simple.

What I pray-- now daily-- is to let me serve others with a pure heart...not expecting anything in return. And God can give me and you that desire if we ask Him sincerely.

I think it's a good thing to help people even when you are distressed by it. I think it's called 'altruism'.
