The President/Vice-Chancellor, Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Prof. Ademola Tayo, has said that no less than 100 open heart surgeries have been done in the school’s Tristate Cardiovascular Centre. He adds that the institution hoped to stem medical tourism with the feats.

Tayo said this on Monday during a briefing to announce the receipt of the 2016 Best Brand Award (Education Category), by the university during the World Branding Awards held in Kingston Palace, London.




The VC, who noted that the university received full accreditation for all the academic programmes presented to the National Universities Commission and the Adventist Accreditation Association, added that the Benjamin Carson Snr. College of Health and Medical Sciences got $20,000 from two members of the Adventist Accreditation Association.

He said, “Our success rate is very high because our staff subscribe to our core values of excellence and professionalism. All our doctors are resident here and we do not go on strike. Our medical students have international exposure and they are going to India for rotation. All our programmes are packaged with professional flavours. The aim is to stop medical tourism and showcase the best of our expertise.’’

In his address, the Senior Vice President, Management Sciences, Prof. Sunday Owolabi, said no student of the university had dropped out for lack of funds. He added that the school had internal mechanism to ensure that students do not truncate their academics in the event of the death of their sponsors.

He said, “We have many programmes to make sure that no student drops out of the university because of funds. About 18 sponsors died last year and the Parents Consultative Forum took over the payment of the tuition of the affected students. Students can work in the school community during summer and get paid. We have a flexible payment plan and if there is any school that is so cheap for the quality we offer, that school is Babcock University.’’

Well, it depends on how many operating theatres, cardiologists, heart surgeons and other medical staff they have on board, as well as how affordable their surgical operations are.

In most public hospitals, there is a long waiting list of patients scheduled for surgery but unable to undergo such procedures due to lack of equipment, inadequate resources and unavailable specialists. So some of those patients might end up going to places such as Babcock if all those things are available.

If they have done 100 surgeries so far, well they should keep up the good work. What I am more interested in, is the success rate of those surgical operations. Have they recorded 80% success, 50% or 20%?
