Chelsea welcome Everton to Stamford Bridge hoping to record their first win in four games having drawn their last match against Cypriot minnows Apoel Nicosia in ignominious circumstances. Similarly, Everton haven’t won in four games in the Premier League, although their late fight-back against Spurs should give them some encouragement.

Everton’s squad has been decimated by injuries this season, particularly in defence where they will be missing long-term absentee Phil Jagielka and short-term absentees Yobo and Distin. In midfield, the continued absence of Mikel Arteta has stymied Evertons creativity, whilst they are much weaker defensively as a result of a long term injury to Phil Neville. Whilst 18-year old Jack Rodwell has impressed visiting scouts from Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge with his on-the-ball elegance, he simply lacks the dogged tenacity and rugged stamina of Phil Neville. Neville is also the leader and backbone of the team, and Everton's hapless defence have sorely missed his protective presence this season. John Heitinga, the Dutch defender has also been unable to fill Neville’s shoes as an auxiliary defensive midfielder.

Chelsea also have their own problems in defensive midfield where Essien has been sidelined for 4 weeks with a torn hamstring. Chelsea will see this game as a good opportunity to put their bad run behind them, considering Everton’s own comparatively poor form and injury crisis. One can just imagine Fleet Street’s finest sharpening their pencils in readiness to expatiate on any real or perceived crisis of confidence at Stamford Bridge should Chelsea elongate their winless streak. John Terry is very aware of this fact, hence his imploration of his teammates to put a winning run together via his column in Chelsea’s last match-day programme. Terry more than most believes such a run is necessary to build an aura of invincibility around the team.

Chelsea should line up in the usual 4-4-2 diamond with Everton employing a 4-5-1. Let the games begin.
