Check out how Whatsapp's new stories-like feature works on android. This update was rolled out on the 23rd of February although Beta testers were not given any access nor hint to its release (i'm one).
This feature was undoubtedly introduced first by Snapchat, then taken up by Instagram and now Whatsapp.
The feature has been given a huge thumbs up by most people while others are not really pleased with the apparent loss of their ability to update permanent text statuses.
Changes in interface and interactive feedback can also be observed with a change in tab format and other features.

For me, I think Mark Zuckerberg intentionally introduced this feature into Whatsapp to get back at Snapchat for not selling to him when he wanted to buy.
