Catholics all over the world today begin the season of Lent as they mark Ash Wednesday today the 1st day of March 2017. The Lenten season is one of importance among Catholics as it is a season of prayer, fasting and abstinence for 40 days with the teaching that these should continue after the season is over. The Lenten season ends on good Friday and Easter is on April 16 2017.

Catholics today are urged to fast and abstain from whatever they can't do without (meat inclusive) and as part of the activities of the mass to be held all-over the world, ash will be marked on the forehead of any one that attends which signifies that dust we came from and dust we will return and it also like in the old testament days shows commitment to turning away from sin and returning to God.
