Lionel Messi has played down the rumours suggesting his unusual 'telephone' celebration against Celta Vigo was a reference to his ongoing contract talks with Barcelona.

Messi set tongues wagging on Saturday night after opening the scoring against Celta Vigo in a routine 5-0 win for the Catalan giants.

The 29-year-old pointed to the stands as he walked back to the centre circle and made a telephone gesture to his ear - with some interpreting the signal as a message to the Barcelona boardroom.
