The steering wheel of my 99 Camry vibrates at about 100 km/h. Experts in the house, what could be the matter. It used to move smoothly at high speeds months ago. Your advice is welcome before I take it to the mechanic.

Check your wheel balance, it might be the cause

I have done that, but it persists.

Let the mechanic increase the engine work and lets see.

@poster, it's wheel balancing. try working on the alignment also. It happened to me 2weeks ago and since i did the wheel balancing and alignment, it has stopped. Now i fly @ 140 and beyond unshake in my German Machine! LOL

Oga Mecho the poster said the car used to move at high speeds before, so probably there's a fault , and i'm veru optimistic that it's the shaft

I am also a victim oooo. I drive a Corolla XLI 2006 model.
My shaft aint bad, I am confused as to what it is,

Thanks guys. I think I'll go for wheel balancing and alignment first. Over a couple of months, I replaced 3 flat tyres and I recently replaced the brake pads. This might be the cause.

Poster listen.When u experience such,first check tyre balancing at a good balancers shop not petrol station balancer.A very good balancer will tell u if ur tyrod,ball joint,upper or lower arms are bad.Im talking from what i experienced in May.A balancer fixed it for.It has nothing to do with shaft ok.More free advice if u need it

Wow, this is the exact problem my Honda Civic 2004 has. It's been doing that for more than 6 months now.
More than three different auto-technicians(Mechanics) have looked at it, yet no solution. We did wheel balancing,alignment shaft, shock absorber, changed all the four rims, changed break pads, tyrods etc, it only reduced slightly, the problem is still there. All of these were prescribed by different Mechanics, and different sums paid, already spent almost 100k on fixing this, but no significant improvement. I have resorted to using it like that. The condition has not prevented or affected it being driven from Kwara to Lagos twice recently.

I think it has to do with wheel alignment, i have the same problem only its slight and occurs at about 140km/h.

@jarus.I use honda as well&i fix all manner of issues at ebute metta.Try fixing the steering by changing it or kitting it with a righty steering.Hope its not a converted car.cus such is common with any model even 2008 model if not done properly

@my infinity FX 35 have excatly the same problem from 100km/h.I have the car taken to Nissan and no solution yet .I will really appreciate a geniune response,as I plan to do something again once I,m back to Nigeria from my business trip.

Im not a mechanic but can offer advice.What may cause vibration at 100Km/hr or about,could be bad suspension i.e upper/lower arm,tyrod,ball joint&faulty steering.If all these are good replace 2front tyres to new not tokunbo,then do wheel balancing in a very good place not road side petrol station.I did all these on May 1st This yr&im enjoyin my accord till this night

well guys that's d price of buying used cars, tokumbo or what ever they are called. know frm d bgning u may b buying some1's problem cause d previous owner might be disposing it probably due to d same problem which he had not been able to rectify after spending so much. wel my daihatsu applause has a simlar problm it vibrates at btw 100 to 110 km/h and d moment i exceeded dis d babe rides very fine so i have 2 live with it. some pple have bn suggting to do wheel balancing and allignment as suggstd also here but anyway i have driving like sometmes pushing to as high as 160km/h and i absolutely enjoy d babe.[color=][/color] [color=][/color][color=][/color]

@toba,Please if you are in Lagos.Can you drop the address of the place where you handle this issue in Lagos.I can try them to fix my car.

It's your front tire, remove it and have it checked whether there's any swollen part in it. Then do wheel balancing.

May be that your wheel bearings are getting damaged, if so, you cant go far with it, the car will soon stop moving, sorry

I've done the wheel balancing and alignment this morning. I will test it properly on the way home this evening and report to y'all whether it was successful. By the way, it cost N2500.

there are lots of reasons why ur steering vibrates at certain speeds

especially for older vehicle, as ur car becomes older, the word resonance sets in, for new cars u have to check ur tyres maybe one of them had a puncture and u patched it.

i used to have a 98 mazda 626 that vibrates at 100km/hr, wat i did was as follows, confirm my tires, confirm my wheels, checked alignment, did wheel balancing

after all this nothing changed, i decided to think it might be the resonance point of an old car that is why every thing vibrates, so the next time i had to travel with the car at 100km/hr steering was vibrating, i increased speed to 120km/hr and it stopped. i then realized that once i get over 100km/hr every becomes normal

well b4 u could take such risk be sure every other thing with ur car is ok, tires wheel shocks and shaft. by the way i hope u did not change ur wheel for an alloy wheel cos at times that can make ur car not have factory balance. and if u have fixed ur tyres at any point that also affects.

but doing more than 100km in city roads is like tempting death, be careful

The solution to your problem is WHEEL BALANCING AND ALIGNMENT. I had the same problem for for month. Whenever I touch 100km/hr, the steering wheel starts vibrating. But after the WHEEL BALANCING AND ALIGNMENT last Saturday, I have touched 130km/hr and still enjoyed the smooth ride without the vibrations.

the question is how old is ur car is it as old as his

it could be your tyres. have you considered changing the ones in front? they might look oK, but might be swollen from the inside especially if you are using winter/tokunbo tyres
Then do your wheel balancing. alignment does not really cause shaking at a mere 100km/h but still do your alignment as well. if that does not stop, send a mail to honda

wheel balancing

I replaced all 4 tyres in April with brand new ones, a month after I bought the car and did the wheel balancing and alignment. After that, there was no vibration, and at high speeds on smooth roads, it was pure gliding.

Since then I have had 3 punctures, you know how it is. This is 8 months since I did the wheel balancing. I just did all that today again but I have not had the opportunity to test run the car. As soon as I have done the test I will confirm whether the problem has been solved.

Had the same problem two months ago.
wheel balancing,alignment all done but with little improvement.
You'll just see ur car behaving in another funny way.
Until one of the tires burst then i had to change it and then everything stopped.
SO check ur tires man.
THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM

Go to a qualified tyre alignment centre and do your wheel balancing. Its only wheel balancing that can solve that prob.

Do wheel balancing and Alignment. That is the solution. If it persist, ask your mechanic to check your tyres if they are bad

Solution : Genuine wheel balance & alignment. At worst you might have to change your tyres before the alignment, this is because the non-alignment could have damaged your tyres (front tyres in most cases). Check your front tyres to see if its "chopping" more on one end that the other.
