Every evening she would sit by the busy roadside, along with the other traders selling oranges. The little business her mother had been managing until what started out as 'just an itchy eye' eventually turned her vision to darkness.

He would always stop by at evenings, donned in a suit and tie, driving a Jeep to patronise her.
He liked her little laughs. They were musical honey in his ears. So he'd always make one or more funny jokes just so he could hear her laugh.

She too loved to giggle at his jokes, his innocent jokes, or so she thought.
Until one day when he requested for her phone number.
She was innocent, still learning the wonders and mysteries of life. So when she told him timidly that she doesn't own a phone he asked if she would love to have one. She nodded timidly.

One night, two nights, three nights and Mama had been noticing her daughter's 'uncaringness'.
Always busy with an object that was both alien and marvellous she would sometimes let it slip from her mind how much an helpless and ageing Mama needed her.

One night, under the mango tree outside the hut, where she had always been receiving calls out of mama's earshot.....
Mama had heard her talking to herself, because hers was the only voice she could hear. She picked up her walking stick and groped her way to the tree.
"My daughter who are you talking to" Mama asked

She was surprised to see mama because she(mama) had walk in from behind.
"Ehm.. Ehm" she stuttered "I'm practicing a spoken poem for school mama" she lied....
Because as innocent as she was she knew well enough that mama won't find it pleasant that a man, a strange man with suit, tie and Jeep had bought her daughter a phone.

Many more days would pass and She would lose her innocence, she would lose her purity to the man in Jeep. Many more days would pass again and she would notice something growing inside her.

So when she told the man in Jeep of this strange phenomenon, he acted with a rush.

It was a rainy afternoon and she had left Mama without mama's knowledge.
"Waka fast nau" he yelled at her as they approached the doctor's office.
"Do not say a word till we leave this place, do you understand?" he warned her
She nodded silently as tears rolled down her cheeks.

In an hour time she would go under the knife to rid herself of that 'something' growing inside her.
That wasn't the first time he had made a little girl go under the knife. And all previous cases had gone successful. He had no fear... until when the doctor came out of the theatre with the announcement.
"I'm very sorry sir, we lost her"

Back home, back in the hut, it had gotten dark and the moon had flee the sky.
Mama laid on her tattered mat calling and waiting for her daughter who's presence she hadn't felt since the rainy afternoon.... Waiting for a daughter that would never return home.
