1. New York cops study art history

New York City cops don't usually spend time in art museums unless there's been a heist, but Amy E. Herman, a visual perception expert, has been regularly employed by the NYPD to teach cops to study famous paintings in an attempt to give them a more critical eye while on the beat. Ms. Herman shows officers paintings such as Jan Vermeer's "Mistress and Maid" and asks them to interpret what is going on, using only visual cues. Her efforts have been praised by many within the department as training officers to “think outside the box,” and sometimes the sessions have surprising conclusions. For example, one officer was shown El Greco's “The Purification of the Temple,” which depicts Jesus kicking out the money-changers, and asked what was going on. His response was that the “guy in pink” (Jesus) should be arrested because “he's the one causing all the trouble.”

2. Canadian police meditate

A police officer's job is often highly stressful, so the Peele Police Department of Mississauga, Ontario decided to include meditation in their training. Officers attended a lecture at a local Buddhist temple, where they were taught mindfulness while in the lotus position chanting “Om.” Meditation exercises for law enforcement trainees are starting to be more common in the U.S. and Canada as several other departments encourage its use.

3. Dutch police training eagles to take down drones

Police in the Netherlands worry about illegal drones around airports and other public areas and have decided to combat the problem in an unusual way. Currently, they are working with “Guard from Above,” a company that trains eagles to attack and destroy the small consumer models that are a growing nuisance and threat. It's only in the testing phase, but so far the birds seem to have no problem downing the drones and are rewarded for their heroic deeds with a piece of meat.

5. Brazilian “Blood Wings” ritual

These shirtless Brazilian cops have just finished their training, and now they are receiving their badge—with the pin slammed into their bare chests. But first, they must scream “caveira” (skull!) as part of the Blood Wings ritual. This type of scarring is thought to have its origins in the US military around WWII but is banned in most parts of the world.

6. Insanely scary Chinese paramilitary police training

If you think U.S. cops are intense, take a look at Chinese paramilitary police doing their training exercises. These police/soldiers are trained to fight on land and sea, in mud, and snow, and must endure psychological stresses as well. The photo below is a public display of their collective might, as they demonstrate a chokehold that would likely be illegal in the U.S.

7. Maryland school police go through “psychosis simulator”

To better understand the plight of mentally ill people they may encounter, police at Towson University in Baltimore undergo specialized training. Part of it includes wearing a device called the Mindstorm, which takes an officer through a psychotic episode from inside the mind of afflicted person. The audio and video device bombards them with messages and visuals that a person might experience. Later, officers were told to go into the field and perform their duties while listening to strange voices on their headsets.

8. Scottish police school U.S. cops on gun-free policing

Shootings of civilians by police is much too common in the U.S., and the cops seem to want to do something about it. A group of officials that included NYPD and LAPD brass traveled to Scotland to study their police force, who have shot just two people in the past ten years. This is because Scottish cops don't usually carry guns, a realization that hit the director of the US Police Executive Research Forum, who organized the journey, “like a ton of bricks.” Other mind-blowing concepts included in the program were "how to de-escalate a situation,” and “tactical retreat.”

9. Cops using Kinect to practice beating people

Kinect may not have “connected” with the mass market, but its motion-sensing capabilities have made it useful for interactive police training videos. A company called MILO Range has created a series of dramatizations that allow police to practice firing, and reloading, as well as using pepper spray and batons on suspects using the outdated technology.
