What Life Lesson Has NYSC One Year Compulsory Service Taught You? by FavoredGuy: 8:40pm On Mar 19, 2017
NYSC one year compulsory service for Nigerian graduates has been perceived as punishment and time waisting period by those who had passed through the programme especially recently, or those currently passing through it now, that everything has changed, even the so-called monthly stipend of N19,800 from the Federal Government cannot take care of the corps members' needs up to at least half-way through the month.
Young graduates keep on suffering during this one year programme which in the past used to be a thing of joy and honour to the persons involved, their family and even their entire community who would go on and on to celebrate their son/daughter that has done them proud by graduating from an institution of higher learning, and upon whom will soon be laid the responsibilities of caring for those who catered for them during their studies and their younger siblings alike, relieving their parents of some financial burden and alleviating the suffering of those around them.
Government, on its own part tailored the programme to bring about and sustain national unity which virtually eluded us as a nation between the years 1967 and 1970 when we almost lost our oneness to Civil war.
The aforementioned objectives were great and achievable until recently when things started changing negatively both from the government and for the graduates. The number of graduates being churned out from our corps producing institutions is on the increase geometrically. And the young, vibrant and promising graduates sometimes lose their lives during the service year due to political and civil unrest, ethno-religious crises, road accident (due to poor state of Nigerian road), lack of adequate health facilities especially in the rural places and list goes on and on.

However, despite all these challenges and problems resulting from the national service, it is still a thing of joy that one graduates before one clocks thirty. This is the joy with which they endure rather than enjoy hardly bearable treatments in the orientation camps and at their PPAs thereafter.
And to some families, picture of their ward in NYSC (Kaki) uniform is an indication that their wards are receiving the best gift parents can give their children- education. So they have to hang it in strategic positions in their rooms to attract attention.
Experience gathered during this 11-month programme varies from one individual corps member to the other for those who depended solely on fate and Divine Providence- I mean those who truly served and not the ghost 'corpers' or those who influenced their posting to favour their personal interests.

For me, the NYSC service taught me the following things:-
i. There is still a future and a hope for Nigeria. In spite of all the present challenges, the youths are getting more and more in love with education which will open the door for sustainable development to come in and stay.

ii. We should not judge a people by what others say about them- I mean a tribe, an ethnic etc. Many are better than they are perceived and vice versa.

iii. To live happily both in scarcity and in abudance: N19800 richer today, only compulsory ledger left in your bank account the next 10 to 15days (not due to extravagance)

iv. Success in life does not depend on the paper called certificate. Many have been fooled into believing thet since they made 2:1 or first class, they will eventually be greater than those who played a 2:2 draw with their schools (I mean those with second class lower popularly referrd to as 2.2) or those with even lower grades 3rd class and pass. After my sevice year, I found out those who made better grades spend more time reading G-MAT and other books to help fetch anyhow work whereas those that don't see themselves as being qualified to apply for certain realize what is facing them earlier and cushion themselves against any oddities. They know their certificates may not take them to their dreams in life and therefore devise alternative means of actualize those dreams. They achieve this more and easier than the former group that roam the streets in search of non-existent job.

Feel free to tell us your own lesson. And pls folks, pardon all my typographical shortcomings.

Can you pls share that experience here even if it should be in disguised form? Experience, they say, is the best teacher. You may succeed in saving one or two souls or helping one or two persons that will learn from your experience.

lol wont disguise....
well was a very social dude back then 2015 AbiaKopa. Am a dad's boy, he sees himself in me i. e traits of intelligence, brilliance and hardwork.
Buh i lived rough, drinks, smoke and of course ladies et al. i usually require medical records i. e std's test from em.
Wasnt addicted to the life, buh did it for the fun of just been called Badt.
Well i took that attitude to NYSC may 2015.I was Squad leader, Kitchen leader, Quarter guard member. I was very active and one particular lady in my squad caught my eye. Lets call het Brudget. She was intelligent, focused, well rounded, firm beasts and social.
Got caught up in this camp love web. I truly liked her, we shared experiences, spoke often et al. By week 2,we were already kissing and stuff(by this time i already asked bout her medical history and she promised she was clean, as a matter of policy i make use of CD, so i felt either ways i was save..) . By the end of camp, we were officially dating.
We were posted to our respective PPA, we were kinda displaced, buh we made sure to embrace after the whole posting process.
So the next day, she came over to the hotel were i Lodged in umuahia, we got freaky, made out and what have you... we then traveled to our respective abodes.
while at home, we communicated often, we longed for each others embrace and love talked alot.
We resumed after 2 weeks, lodged in the same hotel, we made out like rabbits that day, engaged in orals, what have you, couldnt get enough of each other. It was good, everything seemed perfect until she suddenly received a call and went out. I didn't see her till the next month. she finally showed front of my lodge. she couldn't tell me where she was or what happened to her. Was kinda petrified when i saw em cos she looked not okay, buh by then the love had already died. eventually we fought, and she went her way, i moved on with my body count mission... 2 months down the line, i heard a shocker, a male corper had been infected with HIV and guess who gave him?? Bridget. Her friend confirmed the news cos she always traveled to owerri to purchase ARV's. Also heard of her past sexcapades as a runs girl in IMSU with Thailand and Malaysian returnees.
Immediately i heard the news, I panicked. Almost had a heart attack, i now started thinking of the intimate moments we shared, the lies she told, the malaria drugs in her bag and stuff and i said to maself am finished . We acted like porn stars, so i was so sure i was infected.
I went into discreet mode, i didnt bother contacting her, i blamed myself, i stopped my bad life so i wont get anyone in trouble.. I contacted my body counts, ordered them to get tested , they were all Negative... I had a CD policy though, buh in one encounter with Bridget it broke so i felt probably i contacted it via that process. Started reading more on HIV, started feeling like a victim, started feeling sick, lost weight . Wasn't ready to take the test cos i was fvcking scared.
I became so withdrawn and behaved odd, my room mate noticed, friends noticed even family. I became more prayerful cos i was already aware of my inevitable end, so what better way than prepare for it. Stopped smoking, drinking, womanizing.
I became a better person. I finally summoned courage went for the test, twas negative, i tested 2 more times about 3 months later, result was negative
.. was so happy and thankful
i learnt a big lesson and ave taken correction. Dont trust people easily, its your loved ones that hurt you the most... As for the bridget, i warned guys in my circle to stay clear , i avoided her cos she's a bad person. Evil reigneth in her... Am thankful though for that experience cos it bettered me.. Got a good job now, living the life and thankful..Thats my NYSC experience.

NYSC made me have a sense of responsibility. Prior to my service year, I never thought of living alone nor being flexible in my policies so as to accommodate any other person but when my posting came, I had to adjust to having to live next door to an annoying male Corp member, sharing kitchen and washrooms. Initially, it seemed like a joke, but with time we could understand each other and get along well. He realized I was the bossy kind of person that wanted things to be the way I left them while he was the easy going kind who saw to what I wanted to avoid me withdrawing to myself all day. Other Corp members envied us because of the African mentality syndrome but, It dawned on me when he was redeployed and I had to cope with being the only female in the neighbourhood among the indigenes who became so fond of me especially in the aspect of learning to speak their language and sing their songs. Gradually, I became extremely accommodating, friendly and industrious. I could think of how to develop myself and how to make extra cash in a strange land which has helped me today. I also met good and bad friends. Hence, the experience gathered then, has helped tame my excesses and made me a better person today.

I think what she meant by African Mentality is Patriarchism- a belief that men are and should be more valued and/or respected than the women folk in the society which gives the men the power to dominate and dictate over their women counterpart.

@ESTELLE247, is my answer close to what you meant by African Mentality?

. Lol! @ FavoredGuy, not really from that perspective. What I meant by the African Mentality Syndrome is the view that is held by our society that "when two adults of the opposite sex get along with each other so well, that they must be having a romantic relationship or dating sort of", in our African ideology there is nothing like my friend without some negative thoughts filtering through people's mind.
