Month of March is observed as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal cancer is killing worldwide population at an alarming rate. This event aims at spreading awareness and providing information about risk factors, warning signs, and various colon cancer treatments. This fatal disease develops due to uncontrolled production of abnormal malignant cells in large intestine. It has emerged as one of the leading causes of deaths. However, medical professionals state that it can be prevented with the help of cancer screening tests. Screening Tests for Colorectal Cancer There are no significant symptoms of colorectal cancer. However, patients with a family history of this disease should indulge in regular colon cancer screenings. Major screening tests for this type of cancer are given as follows: • Colonoscopy - This test involves inspection of rectum and colon with the help of a colonoscope. Colonoscope is a thin, flexible tube which bears a tiny camera on one end. This tube is inserted inside patient’s large intestine for examining the underlying condition. Colonoscopy can effectively identify the presence of ulcers, polyps, and cancer. • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy - This test is similar to colonoscopy procedure. It also involves insertion of a small flexible scope inside patient’s large intestine. The only difference between sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy is that it only checks lower part of large intestine instead of the complete intestine. • Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) or Hemoccult Test - FOBT test involves checking abnormalities in patient’s stools. Surgeon sends stool sample to a laboratory for detecting the presence of blood in it. However, bloody stools do not necessarily indicate colon cancer. Therefore, surgeons may suggest some additional tests following hemoccult. • Air Contrast Barium Enema - This colon cancer screening test is recommended for patients who cannot undergo a colonoscopy due to some medical reasons. X-rays are taken to detect severe problems in large intestine. A white substance known as barium is given to patients before x-ray test to help identify any cancerous growth. These screening tests can help in early colon cancer diagnosis and increase the chances of a successful treatment. Preventive Measures for Colorectal Cancer Patients between the age group of 50 to 70 should get screened to beat colorectal cancer. In addition to this, the following measures can minimize the chances of occurrence of this life-threatening disease. • Stay physically active • Eat a healthy diet • Maintain a healthy body weight • Avoid consumption of alcohol in excessive quantity • Quit the habit of smoking These simple yet powerful measures can help save millions of lives which fall prey to colorectal cancer every year.
