99. COUNTLESS.

Two terms had passed since Jide was parentically forced out of school.

All pleas from the rest of his extended family to his father's to make him rescind his harsh decision on his first child all proved a fizzer. Therefore, after more than a month on this wildgoose chase, the family eventually bow down to his father's decision and all what they could do at the moment is to wish the teenage boy best of luck.

That was how Jide became an untimely drop out from secondary school as a result of his.......his.......well I can't really come up with the perfect adjective to describe his errant actions.

His mother had been a great mother to him during those trying times. She took him to Odeda where her younger brother abides, and also a far away place from Olomore where his father's house was situated and it was there Jide had learned all the necessary skills to become a professional Tiler.

Darous on his part, save for the occassional feelings of guilt thats always puncturing his conscience whenever he remembers the role he took in how his friend became a drop out, he's undisputedly having the best moment of his 17years on earth with Lola, the girl he stole from his friend.

"I fvcked up....I shouldn't have gone that far." Darous had soliloquized to himself on his way home from school one sultry afternoon. "I shouldn't have taken Lola from him talkless of swindling more than one thousand naira out of him....ah!" He lamented while simultaneously bitting his own lips. "there's no excuse for what I did....no..."

"but there's still chance for you to make amends...." An elderly woman's voice startled him from behind and it was when he turned around that he realized that he had subconsciously made the wrong turn and that had thereby led him to the cassava plantation of the elderly woman.

"erm...erm....am sorry ma." He stuttered, struggling to find his voice.

"nothing to be sorry about my son. I believe God purposely led you here for a reason. I can see you are very disturbed...." The confused Darous just stood rooted to the same spot as the elderly woman began to unleash a 20mins of sermon on his teenage ears. "look up my son, what do you see?"

"erm....sky and....the sun." replied Darous after staring at the sky for a brief moment.

"good...and thats to tell you that, the remaining sun in the sky can still dry a lot from your cloths of past mistakes and thats if you're ready to wash them clean." Its on that idiomatic conclusion that the woman ended her counselling and guided Darous out of her large farm.

"yes.... I need to start washing the cloths by first of all, end everything with Lola. I know she won't take it easily but I will have to apply a strong detergent, if am ever going to succeed in making my cloths free of her stains." He concluded in his mind just before he succumbed to the call of nature on the night of that day.

****

"you filthy whöre...stop disturbing my life, am tired of you. Leave me Alone."

"is that what I deserve from you after everything?" Lola had cried out bitterly when it seems Darous has really made up his mind to end the relationship. They had been on the issue since breaktime when Darous had approached her at the shed and had told her bluntly that its over.

"breaktime? No we still have 10mins more nao...." Lola had replied ignorantly and oblivious to what Darous was implying.

"I can't believe that with all that expensive beauty of yours, you still have enough space in your skull to make space for dumbness."

"whats wrong with you? Are you high or what?....please if this is a joke, please stop it." That was the statement she made before Darous dragged her out of the shed, most importantly away from the eyes of the unneccessary audience they were creating, to the groove section of the school compound whence he'd spoken to her more explicitly.

"bet with me Darous, you will regret this....I swear to you on my virginity you took that, I will never rest until I see you suffer." Lola threatened effusively at him before she exited the groove fuming with extreme anger and hatred towards Darous and all Darous could say to himself after she left was:

"weldone Darous, the mighty drycleaner." He said with a wryly smile and followed it with a light chuckle. "now that have washed the stain away from the cloth, whats next is to spray it under the sun to dry it. Eheh."

HAD I KNOWN?. This phrase has never been said before a regrettable action was taken. It always come at the end of it. Had Darous known, he wouldn't have taken Lola's threat lightly cos there are stains that can be easily removed when washed with something mild and simple as a bucket of water.

While there are also some that takes all your Hypos and will even make sure fainting is imminent upon you before they fled your cloth. And likewise there are some stains that always make sure they damage your whole cloth before leaving it. Such stains are raw Cashew juice, the water from a vehicle's battery and etcetera.

Oblivious to Darous was the fact that Lola belonged to the latter group.

***

4years Later,
Darous now 20yrs old was in 200level at the Federal college of education there in Abeokuta and things were really going smooth for him as an individual and his entire family at large.

Lola on her own, after failing twice to gain admission into an higher institution had enrolled herself in a catering institute as an apperentice and as at the time of this events, she has a few months left to become a standard caterer.

Things had not been running smoothly for Mr Adekunle, the man Jide was living with and that had thereby reduced their daily meals to once or twice per day, solely depending on how luck really shined on them and thats the level they had been maintaining for the past 4 months.

On a fateful saturday afternoon, Jide was sitting inside the balcony of their apartment when he noticed that a wedding reception will soon take place on the small football pitch beside their house.

Instantly, he knew his stomach will never go hungry for that day.
Without notifying his sleeping uncle, he dashed towards his wardrobe and began preparing to attend the reception.

It was one of those times when you have to dress extremely well enough to get the attention of the waitresses in an occassion so that they can serve you the best foods, so also was Jide on this day.

He had barely sat down for two minutes under the broad and large canopy when a female waitress approached him with a plate of jollof rice and chicken meat.

Without raising his head up, he collected the food and began devouring it hungrily. Half way into the food, his eyes caught the sight of a beautiful lady among the passing waitress who was seen approaching the serving area and he hurriedly dropped the rice he was eating on the table before he began to approach the lady.

Sooner than expected, he got to where the lady was getting ready to carry out her next duty and he cleared his throat before talking.

"Lo...la.."He called slowly in a whisper as if the lady will slap him if she caught him calling her name. "Lola...?" He called again but more audible this time around.

"please we will get to your seat very soon, just stay in your seat. Please." Lola replied without turning around to see the person that just called her name. She didn't bother about how the person knew her name because all the waitresses claded in a pink shirt and black jean, including her wore a tag that bears their names on the brest side of their cloth.

"its me Jide." He stated hoping that would get her attention and so it did.

"whats that suppo....se..." Lola stated and stuttered out the last word as she turned around to see the same guy she'd spent half of the last two years searching for now standing before her. "am I dreaming?....Jide? Is this really you?" She said with a suprise filled eyes.

"flesh and blood o...na me be this o." Jide said with a warm smile as they both engaged in a tight cuddle for a brief moment.

"we have a lot to talk about but am very busy right now." Lola stated after they'd both disengaged from eachother when they noticed that the eyes of other guests were now on them.

"thats where I live over there." Jide said pointing to the direction of his house. "holla me there. I'll be waiting for you in the balcony."

"alright. Later dear." Lola said and smiled before they both returned to whatever they were both doing before the meeting.

***

"longtime dear" Lola said with a placcid smile after they'd both settled down on the long bench inside the balcony.

"eheh.....is that what growing up has done to you or what?"

"what do you mean?"

"you calling me dear? And this recent one just makes it the second time in the space of 4hours....something you never did during the 5years we spent together at school."

"its not like that jare...." Lola said with a shy wink.

"And after all the gifts I bought for you, you still didn't find it enough as payment of my tuition into your Dear College back then."

"wait...what gift are you talking about?"

"ahahah....don't pretend now...its too late for that....am not even concerned about that now...."

"but seriously, you didn't buy any gift...."

"what of the ones Darous gave you?" Jide explained.

"you send Darous to buy gifts for me?" inquired Lola, with a confused expression.

"ofcos yes.....whats with the look?"

This sounds like the perfect time for her to get even with Darous. She wasn't lying when she claimed explicitly that Darous never gave her any gift. Infact, he never mentioned Jide to her again since the day they shared their first kiss. Right now seeing the look on Jide's face, all she needs to do to get Jide mad at his friend is just to add a few lies and Darous would be nailed to the cross.

She smiled sheepishly as she gets ready to kick off this Countless, a story of sex, betrayal and vengeance.

"erm Jide...I have something more to tell you...." So She began.
