.... 'an' goes for only a, e, i, o, u. The vowels sounds. All consonants 'a' is being used.

It is the sound of the first letter of the word following the article that determines whether to use a or an. The "h" in honor is silent so the word is pronounced on-or. Therefore it sounds like it starts with a vowel, so we say "It's an honor to meet you."

It is AN honour.

The "H" is silent in the word, thereby making it invalid.

It is AN hONOUR being here today!!

Had to google it. found out "an honour" is the correct grammatical expression because an ellipses occurs to displace the "h" in the word and renders it silent or maybe useless thereby making the first letter of the word a "vowel" which must go with an.

what about words like hour, hotel, house or history etc
is d h silent too?
e.g

i) a hour or an hour

ii) a hotel or an hotel

iii) a history teacher or an history teacher

iv) a house or an house

.
The h in the words above are nt silent so we use "a" except hour because the "h" is silent during pronounciation we use "an" to prevent repetition of vowel sound.

"An" is used for all vowel sounds and in some context letter "h" too. An is used for words beginning with h if:
1. The first letter, which is h is almost silent. E.g an hospital(sounding almost like ospital), an hour, etc. However,if the first letter(h) is obvious in the pronunciation of the word, use article "a." E.g a Hammer
2. If the first letter "h" is obvious in the pronunciation of the word, but the first syllable is not stressed, it could be either "a" or "an"....
