The federal capital territory health and human services secretariat says the rumour making the rounds that meningitis is ravaging the territory is untrue.

The acting secretary of the secretariat, Mrs Alice Odey stated this at a news briefing in Abuja.

She said what was recorded in the territory was eight suspected cases where four persons died in Durumi 1, two in Dakwa, and two rumoured cases in Bwari and Abaji local councils.

She explained that the cases were not confirmed because no cerebrospinal fluid was taken from those that died.

“I say suspected cases because there is no case of cerebrospinal meningitis in the FCT that has been confirmed as at today. That’s because the patients who made their way to the hospital; some of them have just been taken in just before they died. And the only way we can carry out the confirmation test is by extraction of the fluid from the spine, and most of them had died, or they came when they were about to die. So, the fluid was not extracted.”

She explained.

The acting director of public health in the secretariat, Dr Austin Okoro spoke on the level of the administration’s preparedness to tackle disease outbreak.

“We have structures on ground.”

He said.

“From the communities, to the local governments to the FCT level. At all these levels the disease surveillance system has an officer or an informant who from time to time are sensitized, whether there is epidemic outbreak or not, on the key signs and symptoms they have to look out for especially in epidemic prone diseases.”

He explained.

He also advised residents to maintain calmness and avoid overcrowding.
