I initially typed this as a comment on this thread https://www.nairaland.com/3701475/pros-cons-distant-learning. But I thought It'd get a wider reach if I posted it as a topic of its own. And I've expanded it.

In case you don't yet have enough cash to finance a distance learning program or even a physical program, you can always start learning something if you have little time and data to spare.

Here are some services you can use for free.
1. https://lagunita.stanford.edu/ Mostly computer science but a few in other areas
2. https://www.coursera.org/ Covers more subject matter. Just do a search
3. https://www.udacity.com/ Mostly computer science
4. https://www.edx.org/
5. https://www.khanacademy.org/
6. http://oedb.org/ You can get lots of liberal arts education here, music, as well as math and computer science
7. https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/ If you're the type that can read hundreds of pages on your own, this is for you
8. http://www.teoria.com/ for those who want to learn music theory
9. https://plato.stanford.edu/contents.html For the philosophy geeks. grin
10. http://www.openculture.com/
11. http://www.thegreatcourses.com/ This one is not free though. If you have some money to spend you can use this. The alternative? Torrents

You can discover free online courses using Class Central https://www.class-central.com/

Personally I started with udacity in the days of mtn magic sim. I was able to complete CS101 https://www.udacity.com/course/intro-to-computer-science--cs101 Since then I've continued studying python whenever I have time. I am seriously considering a career in computer science so its a win for me to get some preparation

I mostly use coursera nowadays and I've successfully completed a number of courses and got course certificates. That is in case you're very concerned about getting a certificate. Otherwise, you can still learn the material without receiving a certificate.

I also use khan academy a lot, especially when I have some concept in maths that I want to quickly master. You'll find lots of discussions there as well.

If you like to discuss what you're learning, try these

Religious podcast (mostly catholic though, cos its what I mostly use. So I might be biased here, so please don't crucify me. grin. Just add yours)
1. http://catholicaudio..ae/ For the catholic and religious guys
2. https://instituteofcatholicculture.org/ If you're a catholic, longing for orthodox teaching? It doesn't get better. You have option of video on their site or subscribe to the audio on itunes or your favourite podcast app.
3. http://taylormarshall.com/ I especially recommend you go through the archive and check out the series on the book of revelation, from start to finish. Subscribe to the audio on itunes or your favourite podcast app
