Apple’s move to include USB-C into its latest MacBook computers was unpopular with consumers, leading to a sharp fall in the latest yearly laptop rankings by Laptop Magazine. Apple had held the top spot in Laptop Magazine’s rankings since 2010, but in the 2017 rankings, it fell down to sixth place.

Laptop Magazine’s total aggregate score is measured out of six different critical areas: design, support, innovation, value and selection, and warranty. Apple’s computers got a score of 78 out of 100. This was due to its expensive price point and only having USB-C ports that made carrying dongles essential to maximize the computer, and nobody likes dongles. Otherwise, Apple performed really well in every other aspect.

“The company’s MacBooks are slim, powerful and well-built, but you’ll need a pile of money and a bagful of dongles,” wrote Laptop Magazine. “The company’s support and warranty options are second to none.”




Taking the top spot from Apple is Lenovo. It jumped up from placing fourth in 2016 thanks to “groundbreaking technologies and vastly improved customer support.” Lenovo got a score of 90 out of 100. In second place was Asus jumping up one spot from third place last year—scoring an 86. Dell, HP and Acer rounded out the top five.

Samsung and Microsoft came in last place

Surprisingly, Microsoft came in last place in large part due to its lack of notable upgrades and steep price point. Samsung didn’t place that much better, being docked for its small computer selection all with middle-of-the-road ratings and disappointing tech support.
