10-year-old boy commits suicide after father forbids him from watching TV

A disturbing video of a ten-year-old boy jumping 20 floors to his death has shocked China’s online community.

The troubled Chinese youngster, from southwest China’s Chongqing municipality, committed suicide after his father banned him from watching TV, according to a notice posted by the local police’s official Weibo account.

The 10-second clip, which has been shared online, shows the boy falling down and smashing into a parked car beneath his family’s apartment in Dazu district. CGTN has taken the decision to not show the video because it is too distressing.

His devastated relatives as well as the police soon rushed to the scene. Authorities are continuing to handle the incident, according to the police notice.

The tragedy has sparked heated discussion among Chinese netizens. While some blame the boy’s parents for being too strict, others have condemned China's exam-oriented education system and a culture of ignoring mental health problems among young people.

“Children nowadays are being put under extreme pressure, parents should think twice about their old-fashioned paternalism,” commented a reader named anwuzhizhiwang on the news portal website Netease.

“The current education system is at fault, many children can hardly cope with stress, how can they face up to the real world once they step out of their ivory towers?” said another reader named youtaiduwangyou.

Teenage suicide has become a growing problem in Chinese society. According to statistics cited by Beijing Today, more than three million Chinese teens have “below average” mental health conditions and more than 250,000 of them take their own lives each year.

When there is a MAJOR problem in a system it is the MINORS who suffer. TVs have restricted controls that the parents could have set or They could have cautioned the child in a more persuasive way by promising to BUY something the child longs for if the child does not watch TV. NOW all they labored for 9 months + 10 years IS GONE!!!!
