Read my previous editorials on Xbox and Playstation Brands.

The  SEGA Brand began with the development of games for other consoles.  Then they realized it was time to develop their own console.  It began with the SEGA Master System which basically rivaled the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System.  It flopped in the US but had some popularity in Japan and Europe.   This generated enough revenue to begin development on the SEGA Genesis, which at the time of release was the fastest system on the market.

The Genesis was enormously popular with games such as Sonic the Hedgehog and EA Sports titles.  Nintendo then leap-frogged the Genesis with the Super NES and with titles such as Donkey Kong (32-bit style graphics on a 16-bit console), Nintendo once again took control.  SEGA then launched Sega CD, the first game console to run from a CD.  The games were mediocre at best and didn't even compete with the lesser Super NES system.  SEGA also launced the Game Gear to compete with the Nintendo Gameboy but due to the extensive consumption of battery power, it never could compete.  SEGA then continues to produce gaming consoles with the same results.  The SEGA Saturn, and the following SEGA Dreamcast could not compete with Nintendo or biggest name in the gaming industry, SONY.

Ten years previous, the thought of Sega going out of the hardware market was unimaginable. The Mega Drive/Genesis had Sonic The Hedgehog and nothing could go wrong. But time passed and the climate changed. There were hardware upgrades instead of a new platform, then hardware upgrades as well as a new platform… then the Saturn-exclusive Sonic game fell through and to cap it all off the PlayStation came along and trumped Sega in almost every department.

Looking back, it would have been wise to get out then, but Sega still had an ace up their sleeve. Dreamcast. A wonderful, trailblazing console that gave us our first online gaming, DLC store, high definition display, 60fps graphics and so much more. It only lasted for two short years until Sega ran out of money and fled in the face of the  PlayStation 2. They say the brightest flames often burn the shortest.

Though there are rumors that SEGA may solely or team up with APPLE to create a new console in 2010 or 2011., all these are based on patents approved by SEGA on February 10, 2009, for two controller designs, one that looks similar to the Sega Saturn 3D pad with a added touch screen device and one that looks similar to the Mega Drive/Genesis 6-button pad. Sega also approved a patent for USB Flash Memory cards and Hard drive on July 7, 2009.

In September 2009, evidence was uncovered that suggests Sega is expanding into the online gambling sector with the launch of an online casino and poker room in October 2009.

Sega's now a third-party publisher like EA, and doing well from it, so we haven’t really lost them. But we’ll always miss that magic of a Sega wondermachine spitting out miracles in the window of an electrical store…

The Dreamcast still remains my personal favourite console to date.
Shenmue, Soul Calibur & Power Stone changed my life grin not to mention Quake III & Unreal Tournament, Code: Veronica, etc. oh and Gut's Rage! not a classic, but who doesnt love the sight of a 50 foot blade dismembering monsters? cheesy
then there was online play and DLC. . . I remember downloading other gamers' uploaded content directly to my MU(this used to be like a very big deal). That was way back(like 99) when Nova were the only ISP i knew in Lagos.

Ahh, the good ole days. . .

The coolest game I ever placed on dreamcast apart from the sonic games was dead or alive 2. Could play that game for 24hrs non-stop the graphics were tight.

I still have my game shrine where I ve my megadrive 2 16bit game next to it is my playstation 1 portable one, next to it my dreamcast and then my 2 ps2's with loads of games at home. I just packed my ps3 along when going to Abuja, since I was posted there for service. Great memories lol grin
