I heard the dreadful wail
Of a heart bereaved
I saw the coffin march
In requiem procession
The path was clad in dust
The coffin made its way
I spied its deep belly
A wonder met my eyes:

The interior was dark as hell
And the old year stiff and dead.

II

I heard the ringing note
Of a heart pained with joy
Unto us a child is born
Let the bells chime his birth
Intone it from the heights
Let the earth ring with glee
But hush now and be still
The child is being named:

“Because she will bring us life
Let her be called NEW YEAR”
