Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that form around or in the womb. These growths constitute of fibrous tissues and muscle, and they are of different sizes. They are sometimes called uterine myomas or leiomyomas. It’s so unfortunate that majority of women are not aware they have fibroids because they don’t notice any symptoms. For women that experience symptoms, they may notice: Constipation Lower back pain Abdominal pain Heavy or painful periods Discomfort or pain during sex Frequent urination In some rare cases, complicated fibroids condition can lead to infertility or affect pregnancy. When To See Your Doctor Most a times, fibroids don’t come with symptoms so the diagnosis happens by chance during a scan, test or a routine gynecological examination. However, it is advisable to see your GP if you notice the symptoms of fibroids so that possible solutions can be rendered. If your doctor suspects you may have fibroids, he will refer you to do an ultrasound scan to confirm the diagnosis. Why do Fibroids develop? It is also believed that they are common with overweight or obese women because their level of oestrogen increases as their weight does. Women with kids are at lesser risk of having fibroids, and the risk further diminishes as they have more children. Types of Fibroids Fibroid can develop at any area around or in the womb, and they come in various sizes. Some come as pea-size while other manifest as melon-size. Subserosal fibroids. This type of fibroids usually develop outside the womb and extend to the pelvis. They can grow and become very large in size. 3. Submucosal fibroids. They form in the muscle layer underneath the womb’s inner lining and extend into the cavity of the womb. On several occasions, the submucosal or subserosal fibroids are attached to the uterus (womb) with a narrow stalk of tissue. These are called pedunculated fibroids.
