Is An MBA Prestigious In Nigeria? by Nobody: 10:16pm On Jan 11, 2010
Is an MBA still regarded as prestigious in Nigeria? It used to be so hyped round the world. I'm currently doing one and want to know if it will give me an edge over my colleagues?

i hear everybody talking of IT certification as the in thing. Truth is everybody cannot be an IT person.
What are my chances of rising high in management with my MBA? Do i need to acquire any more qualifications?
Re: Is An MBA Prestigious In Nigeria? by asha80(m): 12:27pm On Jan 13, 2010
What is prestiguos in nigeria is the cash you have.

a prestgious university gives a prestigious certificate. Now in nija i think an MBA qualifies u to be looked upon as a first degree holder by employers.

@Poster,

An MBA is highly regarded by employers in Nigeria. However, it will depend on the school where your MBA originate.

For example, the MBA from the UK is more valued than one from any University in Nigeria.

Another example, the MBA from Nigeria rates less than first degree from UK or USA or Canada.

Don't ask me why. Ask real employers in Nigeria.

If your intention is to have an edge over your colleagues, then you should go to the best school that you can afford and that is convenient for you. Where you do an MBA matters a lot. There are lots of Nigerians doing MBA programs in the UK; so that is a standard somewhat. There is a difference between getting an MBA from Harvard, Stanford, etc and getting one from Unilag, LBS, etc.
Re: Is An MBA Prestigious In Nigeria? by Nobody: 4:18pm On Jan 13, 2010
It is, if you can get yours from a prestigious school.

Companies in Nigeria still value those from reputable Nigerian schools too.
Unfortunately, a Nigerian MBA ain't valued in Europe and US.

It is what you can do (practical Skills) that matters more. If you can stimulate profit in an organisation, then you only need an MBA to gain the employers attention. However, If you go in there and sit like a lame duck without doing anything, the wind of change will blow you away, MBA or No MBA. Prestigious school or no prestigious school. grin

If you don't mind me asking, have already been admitted (if yes, what school?), or are you just planning?

True, but after getting through an eye of a needle in gaining admission to and attending a prestigious MBA, spending so much resources, I wonder if such smart person (as evident)still  in his/her right mind would "sit like a lame duck without doing anything" after landing his/her dream job. But then again,  anything is possible.

I dont know why Nigerians like to talk like this ?

Must we disparage everthing about ourselves.

This same Lagos Business School was for 3 years rated amongst the fifty best business schools in the world.

I know there are a lot of things wrong with this country but if we do not learn to appreciate the little successes we have then we will
always find it hard moving forward.

To answer the poster's question,
Anyway, I think the MBA is valuable, infact very valuable.

let me quote from the renowned consultant, Peter Drucker to buttress my point -

'Managerial talent is the scarcest, most expensive and also potentially most effective of all human resource in a business.

I have been in IT for some years now but am seriously considering getting an MBA myself.

Not true.
LBS has never been rated in any ranking I have seen, not since they became Pan-African University.
Their affiliate school, IESE Navarro, is the rated B-School, not LBS. Prior to their getting a license, LBS was awarding IESE degrees.

Guy, what's not true? guess you should check financial times' ranking conducted by KPMG. LBS ranked 50, 47 and 53 in open enrollment education in 2007, 2008 and 2009 respectively. I guess the case method gives it an edge even thugh there are a lot of areas that can be developed by the school.

I believe this is the ranking (for executive education not full-time MBA) that Southsea is talking about.

However, this is for global MBA ranking list in which LBS is not ranked

Thanks SouthSea for your incisive response.

I was just waiting for the close of work to reply to Ajanlekoko's post but you've done that brilliantly.

Though as the rookie stated, LBS was listed in the open/Executive MBA position but I think that in itself is a good Omen.

The import of this ranking is that :

1. LBS is the second best business School in Africa
2. LBS is only bettered by 4 out of the roughly 100 business schools in the UK
3. LBS is better than every business school in Germany
4. LBS is better than evry biz school in the whole of eastern europe save one
5. LBS is better than every biz sch in the whole of asia aside those with affiliations in other parts of the world

I think this is cheery news and should be worth celebrating

Hmmn, so going for the two year full-time MBA may not be a wise decision afterall. I guess people really have to do their research before choosing what school to attend but c'mon the programme should still have some clout at least in the West-African region.

It would be nice to meet some graduates of the programme and get their feedback on the programme's content and life afterwards.

Any volunteers?

I still regard the institution highly though.

Overall rankings of the best MBA schools in the world is many miles away from LBS!

I thought the argument was about 'the best business schools in the world', not 'the best business schools in open enrolment'.

Please educate me more about this online MBA thing, what factors do you have to look out for in the  school? Are there accrediting bodies that have to approve the school?, What do Nigerian employers look at before they accept you as an MBA degree holder?
Re: Is An MBA Prestigious In Nigeria? by joshO: 6:42pm On Jan 15, 2010
MBA's are relevant and can certainly open doors. However, I believe it's important to have a core compentency as that gives you that extra edge. For example, if you've had many year's experience in IT, Accounting, Risk, Finance etc, gaining an MBA could be that tonic needed for accelerating your careers to senior management positions.  It's no longer sufficient to sell yourself exclusively as an MBA holder, with the competition growing, it may be viewed by many as being to generic (particularly the general management MBA programmes). You'll find that nowadays many successful MBA's hold other specialist qualifications such as CFA, FRM, ACCA, SAP etc ,

It is not about disparaging anything. We are being realistic here. What are the chances of getting a job in Europe with an MBA from Lagos BS? What are the chances of getting a job in Europe with an MBA from Harvard, London BS, IE etc? Getting an MBA is not just about attending classes; its about the quality of the faculty, the alumni network, and the quality of students.

Lagos BS was never rated in the top 50 BS.

I don't see how that is possible. Do you know anyone that graduated from Lagos BS? I doubt that IESE would permit Lagos BS to issue IESE certificates. There may be something on the certificate about the affiliation between the schools. The tuition fees for IESE is approximately 70,000 euros; why would it allow another school to issue its certificate when the students are not paying that. Even students that partake in exchange programs are not issued degrees from the school offering the exchange.

MBA is basically for those whom aim to become top management.

You're basically studying Operations, Management, Marketing and Finance (these are the major areas).
Bottomline, you're trained to be a well grounded business manager.

The most important thing is that you are grounded in whatever you study.
Anybody flaunts any certificate these days even without knowing how to speak properly.
