Public Awareness: The Tool To Mitigating Climate Change Risk by DOlumide: 11:07am On May 18, 2017
Carbon pollution is rising, oceans are becoming warmer, sea levels are rising, the temperature of the globe is rising and droughts are getting more intense. From the marine turtles off the coast of Africa to the polar bears in the arctic, our planet’s diversity of life has been at risk just because of the change in climate. A multifaceted problem currently experienced due to imbalanced interactions with the environment.
For climate change risks to be mitigated, sustainable resource mobilization must be adopted in industries, homes and organizations. Do we keep developing new infrastructures without learning how to sustain and conserve the existing ones? Sustainability is the conscious practice of interacting systematically with the environment such that man’s present needs are met without disrupting its capacity to provide for future ones. In spite of technological innovations, if sustainability is not prioritized, climate change will still be a major challenge. This opposes every activity that fosters the extinction of animals, pollution of the environment, unhealthy waste disposal, defacing of the environment, unsustainable urban planning, and non-conservative use of natural resources.

The rapid urbanization and population growth across the globe have generated serious concern for interested stakeholders. Environmental problems, including: bad waste disposal, unclean water, traffic congestion, ozone layer depletion, soil erosion, extinction of animals, acidic rain, deforestation etc. have been proven to be caused directly or indirectly by man’s interaction with the environment. Reducing the imbalance in ecosystem will require that industries, organizations and individuals take a paradigm shift by adopting an internal sustainability concept focused on eco-friendly and minimal use of energy and material in daily activities.

A superlative multidimensional approach to curb climate change is to change the behavioural pattern of man’s relationship with the environment. Improper waste disposal, inefficient use of energy, unsustainable use of natural resources, burning of fossil fuels, pollution and many more are the various problem that constitutes climate change. By orientating the public to adjust their interaction with the environment, it can go a long way in mitigating climate change and reduce pressure on available resources. Simple conservation practices include, but not limited to the following are encouraged.
• Avoid buying unnecessary goods. Choose products with less packaging material.
• Disposing waste in designated areas.
• Planting of new trees to replace exploited ones.
• Buying of raw food items rather than packaged ones.
• Reducing the use of paper by employing electronic methods of writing and sending circulars, letters, and journal papers.
• Using alternatives to wood in building houses and making furniture.
• Donating obsolete goods for other people other than disposing them.
• Driving bicycle to avoid burning fossil fuels.
• Using energy saving appliances and switching appliances off when not in used.
• Developing some personal re-use methodology. For instance, the water used for washing can also be used for flushing the toilet.
• Harvesting rainwater can reduce the devastating impacts of drought.

Effecting these behavioural changes in man will involve a whole lot of public campaign and education. Since most stakeholders are not informed of the vulnerability and the pro-active measures they can take to cut down climate change, raising awareness remains an important component of the sustainability process that will reduce the impact of climate change and enhance adaptive capacity. Public awareness is necessary to bolster enthusiasm, stimulate self-mobilization and encourage local resource conservation. It addresses the knowledge of individuals and organization by ensuring that relevant stakeholders understand the impacts of, and take prompt actions to address specific climate change consequence.

Campaigns can be augmented through various means of communication such as: distribution of printed materials, convening of public meeting, professional training, informal structure and communication through various media such as television, radio, internet, newspaper, and social media. This can also be combined with the establishment of community self-protection teams that promotes self-sustainability among residents and businesses to curtail the risk of property damage.

The more people are informed, the less our environment is deformed. Information Technology (IT) worthwhile tool we need to combat climate change and it here with us already. Many people have access to these information media. They are a viable platform to spread the news about climate change and build adaptive resilience in the people.
