Good day and how is your day?

Without wasting much time, I get this question a lot-

What other things can I derive from processing cassava into garri?

The answer is simple, a lot.

But the question is always a wrong one. The real question should be- Can I get any other commercially viable and productive products from processing cassava to garri?

The answer is hanging on the fence- YES and NO.

Before we discuss the other possible products, let’s discuss this contradictory answer.

WHY ‘YES’?

If you are probably processing a large quantity of cassava daily, it would be a waste, not to think of deriving other products from what we term as the wastes. Let’s say, you process at least, 8tons of cassava daily, into garri, then you should be able to process the starchy water, obtained from fermenting and dewatering into viable sellable products, because, when you collect this so-called wastes over a period of say, every four days, you should be able to come out, each week, with other products to sell or use to your productive advantages.

But processing the peeled skins into other sellable products is always an option, available for both the small and large-scale processing factories.

WHY ‘NO’?
A small scaler, who wishes to collect these starchy waters, would have to wait for weeks to achieve what the large scaler would, in days. And this may leave you with a smelly factory. But, this doesn’t mean you cannot collect them, process and keep- of course, it could take you maybe a whole two months, for you to achieve anything viable, which the large scaler would have achieved in a month.
This doesn’t mean, you should forget the idea, because, there are other productive usage, these waters, would provide for the success of your factory.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE BY-PRODUCTS YOU CAN DERIVE, WHILE PROCESSING YOUR CASSAVA TO GARRI

STARCH

Yeah, that was deliberate , because that is the first thing that would have come to our mind. With the type of factory design I offer , your starchy water, right from fermentation and pressing are easy to collect- without one process, affecting the other

These water could be channeled into a stainless steel or ceramic pits for collection, over a few days of daily processing. After which, this would be processed into starch. This processing simply simple, you do not require any additional machinery for this, unless you are really ready to make starch production, a second business. Whatever starch you are getting here could be used for laundry purposes because of the way the processing would go. Deriving real viable starch would require some percentage of your cassava, crushed and processed.

But this type of starch production would require washing the starch by dissolving the settled starch inside fresh clean water, as many times as would require, until whiteness is achieved, before, sun-drying. After Sun-drying, you grind into powder.

For small scalers, this little quantity of starch, derived daily and processed weekly, could be given free of charge as incentives to workers- only if the manager admits that it is not enough of a quantity to bring in a sensible profit. Because, no matter how small the profit is, it can buy some bags of pure water, packs of table water, a crate of soft drinks and some snacks, even fuel for a day’s job!

TAPIOCA

If you haven’t tried this pudding, with a milk and some sugar or honey, then get away from here!
Tapioca is a crispy product (imagine small-sized popcorn), made from starch and prepared by cooking corn-pap (ogi or akamu). After which you garnish with milk and your choice of sweetener! Jesus! I’m hungry already!

HOW DO YOU PRODUCE TAPIOCA?

Just follow the process required for the production of starch- but after achieving the required whiteness, instead of sun-drying to get your starch, you fry like you would, garri, with less heat. It would be sun-dried to achieve the crispiness required. This could also be packaged and sold!

LOBATAN!

ETHANOL

Still on the starchy water, this could be collected over time and distilled into ethanol. An ethanol distiller for just 100 liters is not more than $500 dollars when imported.

The local way of boiling and skimming could be used too.

ANIMAL FEEDS

Here, both small and big scalers have a chance. You cassava peels may be sun-dried and fed to you goats, sold to intending processors, or given freely to your host community. All are productive means.
But I would discuss the popular way of converting into poultry or livestock feeds. The process is simple and it is already all over the internet. Though, this would be fed to your chicken as a form of supplements only (a good source of starch and calcium), and not the regularly needed meal. But, while your poultry birds eat this once in a day, instead of the regular expensive meal, you would be amazed at how much this would be saving you. A good dose of calcium cannot be overemphasized!

For owners of cattle, pigs, and other livestock, this is your lucky day! Feed them as much as you would require! This is not a substitute for the green grass though.

And hey, do not feed your livestock, especially goats, with a peeled skin that is not sun-dried, if you do, I can assure you of their death, due to the present of cyanide, that we remove from garri, through fermentation and or frying!

SO, HOW DO YOU PROCESS CASSAVA PEELS TO ANIMAL FEEDS?

1. First, you wash the peels.
2. Grate or Grind
3. Dewater by pressing and store in to give to your livestock. For poultry farmers, after Dewatering,

4. Fry or Sun-dry
5. Sift
6. Store and feed at will

Livestock farmers can only store from 1-3 months, while the poultry farmers can store from 1-6months.

BIOGAS or BIOFUEL
Your cassava peels can be a very good source of fuel if you employ the right person to construct a biogas digester. Though, this cassava peels would be put in the digester, alongside, other decomposing elements like cow dung, poultry droppings and so on, to generate gas and or electricity for your factory use.

The processes are quite simple:
1. Construct a digester
2. Collect your wastes
3. Soaking
4. Composting
5. Feed the digester with the composted substances
6. Leave to incubate
7. Use your gas/fuel

I would have explained more about this, but how could I possibly explain a process I do not know everything about ? Consult the right person and you are good to go!
