May 22, SF Mayor Diane Feinstein declared this day to be “James Bond Day" to honor the premier of “A View To Kill," a third of which was filmed in the city. Stars Roger Moore and Grace Jones were present along with the rock group Duran Duran, which sang the title song.

May 22, Sonia Gandhi, the Italian-born wife of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was designated to lead his Congress Party through national elections, one day after his assassination. However, Mrs. Gandhi turned down the position.

May 22, Kelly Flinn, the Air Force's first female bomber pilot certified for combat, accepted a general discharge, thereby avoiding court-martial on charges of lying, adultery and disobeying an order.

May 22, In Israel the Supreme Court ruled that women may read out load from the Torah and wear a prayer shawl at the Western Wall. In 2003 the Supreme Court rejected the rule.

May 22, The remains of Chandra Levy, former intern to Calif. Rep. Gary Condit, were found in Rock Creek Park, Washington DC. She was last seen April 30, 2001.

May 22, AnnikaSorenstam became the first woman since Babe Didrikson Zaharias in 1945 to tee off against the men on the pro tour, playing in the first round of the Colonial golf tournament in Fort Worth, Texas. Sorenstam missed the cut the next day by four shots.

May 22, First Lady Laura Bush was heckled by protesters during a visit to holy sites in Jerusalem.

2012 May 22, The first woman to command a major Royal Navy warship took up her post. Commander Sarah West (40) took control of the frigate HMS Portland. West has served in the Royal Navy for 16 years.

2014
May 22, In Indonesia Anne Marie Drozdz (40), a British woman, was found dead in the cultural tourism district of Ubud, Bali island, and that there were signs her villa had been broken into. Police on May 24 arrested construction worker Hambali (32) in Jakarta, where he fled following the robbery and murder of Drodzd.
