May 30 serves as the remembrance day of Biafra heroes who died during the Nigerian civil war in 1967. The Igbos, led by Odumegwu Ojukwu, declared Biafra state and announced that it has seceded from Nigeria. It turn into a full blown war as the Nigerian troops (with Yakubu Gowon as Nigeria’s President) clamped down on Igbo lands for 30 months, with many loss of lives and properties recorded. After three years of non-stop fighting, in fear of being assassinated, General Odumegwu-Ojukwu in 1970 handed over power to his second in command, Major-General Philip Effiong and traveled to Ivory Coast where he was in exile for 13 years.

In 1982, the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Shehu Aliyu Usman Shagari granted an official pardon to Odumegwu-Ojukwu and opened the road for a triumphant return for him. At the end of the war, “No Victor, No Vanquished” was declared, and the Igbo people were reintegrated into Nigeria. Ojukwu contested as a presidential candidate three times under his party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) but lost. Until his illness, he remained the party leader. He died in a London Hospital in 2011, at the age of 78.

Ever since Nnamdi Kanu’s led IPOB gained momentum and gathered support, renewed agitations for a sovereign state, Biafra, has become louder. Protests have been held on many occasion, especially when Nnamdi Kanu was put in jail by the Nigerian government.
After Kanu was bailed, he was giving stringent conditions by the court, but he has since been showing signs that he would flout the conditions. IPOB declared a sit-at-home strike all over the Igbo lands (Biafra), and here are the pictures and videos of a deserted street in the South East. This move is a plain non-violent strategy employed by IPOB. They call for referendum, but the Nigerian constitution did not provide an opportunity for that.

Streets and market places in the South East states are currently deserted owing to the "Sit at Home" order issued by IPOB leaders in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Biafra war.

The residents of the different states are scared of coming out to engage in their lawful activities for fear of being attacked by the IPOB members.

The different south east governors and the police have issued statements assuring the residents of the different states to go about their lawful businesses as there would be maximum security provided for them.

As today marks the 50th Anniversary of the end of the Biafra War in Nigeria, this is a throwback photo of the leader of the breakaway Republic of Biafra, Colonel Odumegwu Emeka Ojukwu popularly known as 'Ikemba' reading a speech as he declared the independence of Biafra on May 30th, 1967.
