Police were forced to shoot a huge 13-stone dog after it ripped a woman’s throat out and then stood guard over her body.

The blood-smeared beast, called Raskon, reportedly attacked the 72-year-old woman as she walked through a town.

The breed of dog – known as Kangals – are said to be so vicious they are used in their native Turkey to guard livestock from wolves and even bears.

A witness who saw the attack on Tuesday evening in Frohnstetten, near Lake Constance, in Germany, described the pensioner being torn apart on the ground by the animal.

She said: “I heard screams, saw the woman lying on the ground covered in blood, her whole head in the dog’s mouth.

“The dog would not let go and was shaking her wildly.”

The dog is then said to have lay down next to the victim and snarled at any medics and police trying to approach.

Officers had to unload eight bullets into the animal before it finally stopped moving.

But they were too late to rescue the woman, who died of massive amounts of blood loss at the scene.

Locals directed police to a nearby house that the dog escaped from where they found another Kangal and a mongrel tied up outside.

They shot both dogs before forcing their way into the home that also contained 20 cats.

Erika Schmidt, who owns the house, is said to have arrived home later and was horrified by what had happened.

The 43-year-old said: “I am so sorry at what has happened. I only had him for three weeks but wanted to sell him.”

On May 9, she posted an online advert to sell Raskon that said: “There should be no other dogs or children in the home. He is cuddly but needs a strong hand.”

Ms Schmidt is now facing charges of negligent homicide in the death of the elderly woman.
