For a while, the Nigerian economy has been facing hard times. However, the founder of AFRIMMA, a pan Africa music award, Mike Dada, in a chat with Saturday Beats, said music can be used as a tool to boost the economy.

He opined that through music, the economy would not only witness a positive change but the image of the country could also be portrayed in a better light.

He said, “I believe Nigeria can use music to improve on its GDP. We are like any other sector of our economy. Music in general has two features; it is a public relations tool and it is also an economic tool if properly channelled. Music is a social orientation tool that we can use to promote the country and the continent and sell us to the rest of the world. Instead of hearing about Boko Haram, they could hear about P-Square, D’banj, Falz or Tiwa Savage. It is not that other countries do not have other problems or criminal activities than we do but they have more positive narratives than negative ones. In America, New York has a very high crime rate as well as South Africa but because of their positive narrative, they have a higher appeal. Music is a tool for growing the economy and it is a perception tool as well.”
