Shuaibu Amodu (April 1958 – 10 June 2016) was a former Nigerian football player and coach who played as a forward.

Playing career:

Amodu, a striker, played for Dumez and Niger Tornadoes. His playing career ended after he broke his leg.

Coaching career:

Amodu has managed a number of club sides in Nigeria, such as BCC Lions, El-Kanemi Warriors, and Shooting Stars; he also managed Orlando Pirates in South Africa.

He first managed the Nigerian national team from April 2001 to February 2002. Amodu later stated that his dismissal was "unfair", and also said that, a month later, he had yet to receive a formal letter confirming his dismissal.

He was re-appointed manager in April 2008. In December 2009 the Nigeria Football Federation stated that Amodu was under pressure,[6and in January 2010 there was speculation about his future. He was sacked in February 2010.

Amodu was appointed technical director of Nigeria's national teams in May 2013.

He was re-appointed Nigeria manager in October 2014, replacing Stephen Keshi. It was his fifth spell in charge of the country. Keshi returned to the role two weeks later but was fired in July 2015 and Amodu took over the Eagles again temporarily. He was replaced by Sunday Oliseh on a permanent basis later that month.[

Later life and death:

Amodu died on 10 June 2016, three days after the death of Stephen Keshi.

How BCC Lions launched Amodu to the world – Kaave

former chairman of the once dreaded BCC Lions of Gboko, Barrister Chive Kaave has explained how the former Nigerian champions launched the coach to the whole world.

In a chat with Daily Trust, the former board member of the then Nigeria Football Association said BCC Lions laid the solid foundation on which Shaibu stood to reach greatness in his professional career.

He said the late coach became a household name in the late 90s when he led the BCC Lions of Gboko to domestic titles and later a continental title.
Kaave also said it was while he was with BCC Lions that Shuaibu was floor the first time sent on secondment to coach the Super Eagles when Alhaji Ahmed Sani Toro was the Secretary General of the NFA.
Kaave said for this reason the people of Gboko are highly sentimental about Shaibu who married his wife while serving as the chief coach of BCC Lions.
“BCC Lions FC laid the foundation on which Amodu Shaibu stood and launched his career.
“It is now an open secret that Shaibu won his first career trophies with BCC Lions when he won the double in 1994. He would later win the African Cup winners Cup still with BCC Lions.
“We provided the required motivation for him and his players to excel. His first official car was in BCC Lions. While in Gboko, he married his wife who has given birth to his children.
“It will be recalled that I personally signed the letter for his secondment to the Super Eagles. That was his first national assignment,” he said.

Kaave therefore said the sudden demise of Shaibu will be so hard for Nigerians, particularly the people of Gboko to forget as he said only time will heal the pain of the monumental loss.
“This is why the people of Gboko are so sentimental about Shaibu and his sudden demise will forever be a sad moment for the people of Benue state especially Gboko football fans who loved him dearly,” he stated.

The former Ambassador of Nigeria to Argentina therefore called on the government to find a way of immortalising Amodu Shaibu who qualified Nigeria for two World Cups in 2002 and 2010.
Amodu Shaibu died serving Nigeria as Technical Director in the Nigeria Football Federation.
