Every African who has watched this movie (‘3 idiots’) will definitely smile and admit that this is an awesome movie when he or she hears the name.

There is no doubt that this movie has a moving and fantastic story and one that will have a significant impact on you anytime you watch it.

I watched this movie for the third time with a friend, I learned something I have never realized.

Rancho is the lead character and constantly has problems with the educational system, something he believes produces only Machines.

There is, however, one actor who loves the system; Chauver! He is the exact opposite of Rancho. Chauver is great at memorizing long definitions and long essays without bothering to know the meaning not to talk of how to apply them. Being Engineering student meant that he could only pass exams but not fixing mechanical problems nor electronic issues. He only studied for grades and not for passion, he studied to be certified (A+) but not for the wonders of science. Does that ring a bell?

My friend asked me a question, do you know this movie has a message for Africans?

Of course I didn’t know that and my response was swift. He smiled and asked, where did Chauver say he comes from? I quickly responded Uganda and it became clear what he meant.

How accurate the producers were in using someone from Africa (not necessarily from Africa but in the movie he is) to play such role! It was perfect; Chauver represents the educational system in Africa where we heavily rely on bookish definitions but can hardly apply a thing. We are encouraged to memorise and produce during exams and we are certain to receive awards for that. Those who cannot learn by rote are left frustrated like Joy(the student who committed suicide), the system doesn’t allow you any breathing space.

Chauver represents you and I; constantly hoofing and puffing to become first in our class rather than enjoying what we are being taught.

We do not care whether we understand or not once we pass our exams we are the heroes.

That is our Africa, that is what Chauver represents.

Until we learn to be like Rancho we will never be our bosses but screaming and shouting out our peasant achievements.

I really have to go because the educational system will not allow us to do other things but I promise I will not stop writing. You should not stop doing what you love to do.
.
.
Like Rancho, I will live every moment to the fullest. I am certainly not dreaming to be like Chauver, it should not be your dream too.

Chauver is Africa, Africa is Chauver but Africa must be Rancho. ‘3 Idiots’ sent us a message about the flaws in our educational system. We may not have realized but it certainly gives us some solutions we can us to build Africa. Africa must be Rancho.

This is the message RETHINK 2017 is all about....

Awesome piece!

At some point during my university education, I became disillusioned. Quickly, I felt I was becoming lazy so I doubled my efforts. Still, nothing changed. The system was/is designed to create machines who read to pass...

Therein lies the problem.

Funny enough, the bitter truth is that most people that will agree with you are those that didn't do well academically. Don't get it twisted, academic success is still good.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to come first in your class. It's not everyone that succeed academically that crammed to do so. Some people are genuinely intelligent.

@op, wouldn't you want to come first in your class?

u are right... I sensed that when I saw that movie too... we only read to pass

You're right to a large extent except for the name which is Chatur, not Chauver.

I agree with the OP and i am academically excellent (not to brag). I realised that it was useless to get A in a course you know from within you dont really understand. I always study to understand the principle behind any mathematical or scientific statement. What assumptions were made and what determines or undermines its applicability. In O level physics, we memorised stuff like motor and generator rules but never really understood why these rules work and how they could be applied. At a point, i had to go back to start reading O Level physics and chemistry from the very begining. I can bet that 90% of Nigerian engineering graduates dont know why in stoichiometry, masses have to be converted to moles. Show me a Physics student that knows why the formula for centripetal acceleration is: a = vsq/r or the engineering application of moment of inertia to rotating bodies. Personally, i am doing an academic retreat to understand and be able to apply all those modules we studied just so we could pass due to lack of breathing space to study properly. I was to do masters this year but i delibrately postponed it to next year to give me ample time to cover, understand and practicalise some engineering modules first.

First time I saw the movie,I got the message...If at all a student in any Nigerian tertiary institution should try what Rancho did,I bet such student wouldn't last an academic year before being expelled..

some things can't just work in Africa.

The system is created so Africans won't be able to have an industrial revolution. If there was a more sustainable pratical intensive system, Africans will be able to reduce importation of machines and other technological advances that we rely so much on the west for.
If in this present time in history we can't even get Nigerian refineries working, what hope have we. We have lots of first class graduates with zero practical skills.
By now, we should be making various household appliances locally.
What good is a first class graduate in mechanical engineering who also has a msc and PhD but can't design and produce a simple lawnmower.

all izz well. one day, it shall come to pass.

but on a serious note, the education system and formula in Africa is a form of ''Education for Underdevelopment''
Re: 3 Idiots And Rethink (2017) by Nobody: 12:38pm On Jun 14, 2017
Nothing has improved world wide on the educational system except for Finland

As uniquely different as we are, we all still sit in four cornered wall and get taught the same way and judged the same way...

All my life I haven't watched any movie twice completely, except for 3 idiots which I have seen like seven times and every time seems like the first time cause there is always something new to learn.
God bless the producers of that movie, it is a must watch for every one especially for students.
