FELLOW NIGERIANS, DID YOU KNOW THAT SOMETIMES ALL IT TAKES - FINANCIALLY - FOR YOUR CHILD OR EVEN YOU TO STUDY IN THE USA IS JUST THE FEE FOR THE SAT EXAM?
Yes, that can be the case. In fact, the few Nigerians who knew this secret have made very good use of it over the years.
Very good secondary school result + Very high SAT result + Records of participations in some extracurricular/leadership activities = huge sum scholarships to study in an American university or college.
You got that?
Okay let me give some explanations here:
There are various institutions in the US (and sometimes elsewhere) that provide different types of scholarship and financial aid to outstanding international students wanting to study in the USA.
To get admitted into an American college or university, a student needs to apply. Usually, the major requirements for the application are the student's secondary/high school transcripts or results, reports from his teachers and principal, records of participations in extracurricular and/or leadership programs and the like. Students, especially those that are homeschooled, can submit results of their O' Level exam results. These can be for exams like the IGCSE, IB and quite often SSCE(WAEC or NECO). The admission officers in the US college or university the student applies to will convert the result into the American GPA grading system for high school. This allows them to determine if the applying student meets one of the basic requirements for admission into their institution.
Most of these colleges and universities also use the level of participation of the student in social, extracurricular or leadership roles as another criterion for admission. This is why we usually tell our students at the Be-Noble Home School to try as much as possible to participate actively in students' clubs, sporting activities, extracurricular events and in other worthy social activities. Pictures taken, certificates obtained, acknowledgement/recommendation letters received and trophies/medals won during such events at school, in their communities and so on can go a long way in putting them ahead of others in their bid to secure admission into foremost American higher education institutions. The same goes for students with very special skills like the ability to play a musical instrument.
However, the most important criterion for getting admission and also for winning various scholarship awards is an exceptionally high score in the SAT or the ACT. A student that is able to have very high SAT or ACT overall and sectional scores would have succeeded in securing for himself or herself a fully paid-for university or college program in the USA. Sometimes the scholarship includes payment for visa and travel ticket.
Getting such high scores in either the SAT or ACT is however not that common in Nigeria. This isn't because the exams are hard but it is principally because the students ain't prepared enough and rightly.
At the Be-Noble Home School, we adequately prepare our students for the SAT and/or ACT by tutoring them on the best strategies to use to tackle questions on the various topics/question types in every section of each of the tests. For example, we use very many real SAT questions to teach our students each of the 28 question types in Writing and Language Test, 13 question types in the Evidence-based Reading Test and over 50 question types in Mathematics. The same goes for the Essay Test for those that take it.
The American education system is 'analysis-based'. But that can't be confidently said about our own system here in Nigeria. Worst still, most of the highbrow schools in the country adopt the British system and curricula. But parents usually want their children to attend American universities after their high school education in Nigeria. The fact, however, is that the American education system is quite different from that of the British. This is another major reason why Nigerian students are not usually among the top scorers in the SAT or ACT. They haven't been educated the American way.
Be-Noble tutors are trained to teach both the British and American curricula. So you can be rest assured of trusting your child's education in the best hands.

My next article will be on how to apply for and easily get scholarships as an international student. After that, I shall tell you about the HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION PROGRAM in US Community Colleges. You will get to see how the Chinese and few other nationals have benefitted largely from this program.
