For every film producer that says Nollywood is neglecting its slapdash storylines, its complete disregard for attention to detail, and its underlying ideology that says, “if you can cut it to an hour and thirty minutes, or two hours then it must be good to go.” There’s another that says, “Bullshit! These kids don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.”

We too once had dreams of a Nollywood filled with films like Ojukokoro, and the Wedding Party, but we stumbled on IROKO TV’s new film on Youtube and then we realised that we were smoking lizard shit. The new productions you hear about are not the rule, they are the exception. With titles like Nkwechube The Meat Seller parts 1 and 2, Wife for Rent, and War for Love Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 old Nollywood is not going anywhere yet. In fact, it’s more visible than ever before if you know where to look. And what’s more, some of the titles on there aren’t doing badly at all.

Not Enough, a 2 hour 14-minute long saga of complete absurdity starring Alex Ekubo, has been seen 30,810 times since the 14th of July, and 87 percent of all the people that have seen it love it. In all honesty, it isn’t bad. Alex Ekubo fakes an Indian accent, and somebody gets pregnant, what more could anyone ask for?

In as much as we crave a Nollywood that churns out blockbusters that are as profitable as they are good, we cannot ignore the beginnings of the genre. Some call them mediocre, but that would be belittling them – stripping the week-long efforts of anyone with a DSLR and a dream of any value.

Without an audience, there is no great film, so as we praise the newcomers with their big budgets and their not entirely terrible PR teams, let’s hold out a candle for the old Nollywood standard. They aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
