Stellenbosch FC will not renew the contract of coach Sammy Troughton, after they failed to gain promotion to the Absa Premiership, officials have confirmed.

The Cape club, formed at the start of the season after the purchase of the Vasco da Gama franchise, finished third in the end of season promotion-relegation play-offs behind Baroka FC and Black Leopards.

Troughton departs despite the club finishing third in the National First Division standings to qualify for the play-offs.

He is likely to be replaced by Steve Barker, who worked alongside him but has a long-term contract at the club.

The 53-year-old Troughton previously coached at University of Pretoria, Mpumalanga Black Aces and Free State Stars in the Absa Premiership.
