What is a 'Method Statement' ?

A Method statement is a safe work method statement or procedure prepared especially for high risk task, it highlights the various tools, machinery, personnel and step by step process of getting the work done.

Method statement is part of the safety requirements on site, and are usually approved by the consultants / contractors before such high risk work are carried out.

Purpose of 'Method Statement'

The primary purpose of a Safe Work Method Statement 'SWMS' is to help both supervisors and workers or any body involved in the work realize the risk involved and also understand the requirements (tools, equipment etc) and procedure that have been established to carry out the high risk construction work ensuring safety of persons and structures alike.

The method statement should outline the hazards involved and include a step by step guide on how to complete the job safely.

Importance of 'Method Statement'

The SWMS will provide information about the types of high risk construction work being done, the health and safety hazards and risks arising from that work, how the risks will be avoided or controlled and how the risk control measures will be put in place.

It is important to note that having a SWMS in place is not enough, work must be carried out in accordance with the SWMS and if not being done according to the SWMS, such work must be halted immediately.

The Safe Work Method Statement 'SWMS' should also be reviewed if a control measure does not control the risk or a request for a review is received from a health and safety representative or the consultant on site.

Example of Work where 'Method Statement' is considered important

If you're doing a demolition work, say for example breaking down concrete works after they have been cast, demolishing a slab, a cantilever or simpler task like partly removing supports to decking before 21 curing days etc.

A method statement should always be prepared for difficult task, analyzed and works carried out accordingly to ensure safety of life and properties.

Note: While it is important to prepare method statement for certain work (e.g demolishing an existing balcony or boring through a slab), there are other work which might necessarily not require a method statement (e.g casting of concrete slab). - However having a method statement enhances the quality and safety of the job and workmen.

There is no small project - If you're building a gate house on a waterlogged site, a Method Statement is your best friend.... No matter how small, doing it right shd be in mind..... even if its not as celebrated / documented like on the BIG projects - it shd be scripted on a piece of paper.

OGA OP , this grammar to much for the houses way people dey use 2-6 years build do you think after one year them go still remember where those papers they when they hear say cement na N3,300 . this story na for people way dey do large project or way dey build complete house within 6 months.
